2016 Z06. I bent Rim, 28k miles. I have been lucky.

I have 9,500 miles on my first Corvette - a 2017 Stingray (non-Z51 with 18" front & 19" rear wheels) that I ordered new. Fortunately, I have experienced ZERO issues with my car......although it is pretty much a garage queen. Obviously, a bent rim is a huge potential pitfall of owning a performance car, and I have seen a lot of comments on this forum pertaining to that issue. I am not sure how common a problem it is, but most of the incidents seem to occur with those who own GS and Z06 cars. Perhaps it is because of the larger & wider wheels? Different tread compound? Are their owners driving them harder? I have no idea.

It is quite disappointing to experience such a thing - like having a flat tire, but much worse. My heart goes out to any of you who have had this occur.

900 miles and my first wobbler in 7 Corvettes (and many, many miles). Hit nothing of significance, just normal driving.

Tadge needs to own up to this....

To the owners who have or had bent or cracked wheels what were they? Black, Chrome, Machined Face, or Base?

James Dean 05-11-2019 10:42 PM

Even my Z51 had issues with the 19/20 wheels but I swapped to the base wheels without issues.

I'm 75 been driving since I was 16 owned 33 corvettes wife drove vetts foe several years. My daughters bought and drove corvettes till they had kids. What I'm saying is no wheel problems till this C7 Z06. I drive the same roads take same trips so it's not like I changed location.

2014 Torque wheels, 107,000 miles. Not a ripple in the rims.

I also have not heard of any Torque rims bending ever.

joemessman 05-12-2019 02:06 AM

Drove my son's 2017 Z06 up to Las Vegas and back. A 390 mile round trip. Two wheels cracked. I drive that same trip quite often in my Stingray and have never bent, or cracked a wheel. Ray has 18 and 19 inch.
It's bad enough that GM installs cheap wheels on the car, but not owning up to the issue is distrustful and immoral. It's rather expensive for owners of these cars to replace the wheels. An expense they absolutely shouldn't have to bear.

Looks like this issue is starting to get serious publicity. Jalopnik also did an article.

Bought my 2016 Z with 30K miles on it in December 2017. I had Chevy inspect it prior to purchase and they found a cracked rear wheel. Mine are black.
I put on around 5K miles last year and in the fall I ran over one of those right angle construction joints that really jar you.
I fully expected to find another cracked wheel(s) this spring but no.

Also note that you may have a crack and not leak air, at least not for a while. Mine never did in the months I was waiting for the dealer to get me a new wheel.

trumanjd1 05-12-2019 07:45 AM

I just had 4 all seasons Michelins on my 2019 GS, PURCHASED TIRES AND INSTALLED AT PURCHASING DEALER..took it home (only live short distance from dealer and really didnt notice anything unusual), been raining non stop here and hadnt driven it since(May3rd) Took it out Yesterday and heavy vibration about 25 MPH.. and even worse at about 45 MPH...didnt have any problem. with this with my summer only OEM tires...Took it back to dealer( yesterday)with a skeleton crew there..Now sitting on lift waiting for Monday morning to deal with service manager..not sure if defective tires?, installer bent rims? not properly balanced..but I am sick over this..after spending so much $$ and ruining my driving experience with this car.

MHE-Plex 05-12-2019 07:57 AM

17 GS less than 9000 miles of “Sunday driving“ all 4 bent but only two of them badly enough to replace. I kept the two bent wheels also. May look into having them straightened because it sounds like I will need spares someday.
Black with red stripe.
Never use track mode.

trumanjd1 05-12-2019 09:11 AM

Same here..only 3200 miles...Weekend drives..mostly in Touring Mode...I dont know if its possible to bend wheels when changing tires on these rims I have Tire and Wheel warranty when I purchased GS at an extra cost of . $700.00. Either way..will talk to Service Mgr to get this remedied ASAP.
I f I hadn,t spent this warranty money.. I would IMMEDIATELY purchase aftermarket wheels.

jfw949 05-12-2019 09:23 AM

WTF! I'm about to sign the papers on a 2019 GS! They asked about wheel insurance, and I'm thinking what another scam to get money...although i did get the extended bumper to bumper (good idea?).
Now I'm thinking what a scam to sell cars with defective wheels and then charge you additional "insurance" on them! What kind of BS is that?

I'm calling the dealer tomorrow and telling him I'm not signing unless they include the warranty, or put new wheels on.
I'm so pissed that I'm about to drop 60 on my dream car that has known defects. Obviously not as pissed as you current owners are with these issues.
Thanks for that post DDP! I'll reply if I get anywhere with that discussion tomorrow. If not, I'm going to get a used Z51 for way less, and that #2 dealer can @#$% off.
