Weatherstripping driver's side

Does anyone know why there is a split in the top weatherstripping on the driver's side 1996. I was told this is common and not age or damage related? Rain water penetrates. I recently bought the car and the seller told me prior to purchase.

The rag-top needs "splits" in the WS since it folds up when lowered, whereas the targa-top uses continuous WS.

Looking in say Eckler's catalog the top WS is shown in 2 pieces.

My 1992 convertible seal looks similar to the pic above (maybe a smaller gap) & doesn't drip in rainy driving, only drips water on me in the carwash.
Lesson learned. ;)
