'68 427/390 Carb Recommendations
My '68 has the original block, internals, heads, intake et al. The only things non-original is the carb and the alternator.
Several has suggested the replacement Quadrajet with an electric choke is not the best long-term, which is currently on the car. Very hard to start after sitting a week, but runs pretty good once the car warms up. Any suggestions for a nice carb replacement? Looking for a direct drop on, where I can still use the same air cleaner et al (if possible). |
if the only problem is the hard starting after a week I would look into sending the carburetor to Lars by contracting him at v8fastcars@msn.com for a rebuild..

:iagree:
Send your carb to Lars. He is the best, anywhere. Think of it this way, that carb has lasted and given you great service. Rebuild it and it will give you many more years of trouble free service. Swapping out to a Holley or other carb may cause you to run a plate adapter, swap air filters, change linkage and fuel lines. If you plan to upgrade the intake and other mods, then a different carb may be the answer. If not stick with what you have. |
I would look for an original style Quadrajet and send it to Lars. The “rebuilds” are commonly so screwed up that they aren’t worth fixing. Lars has a thread here on problems with rebuilds.
Dont worry about finding a numbers matching carb unless you are into judging and want to spend at least $1000 for a core. Look for someone selling a dusty, dirty, un-monkeyed with old Quadrajet. Pre ‘73 if you can. Do some research on part numbers and date codes so you will find a good one. You don’t really want a later emissions tuned Carb. |
Thanks for the feedback.
Lars was one of the people that said my replacement card was not a good one. I like the idea of finding and old Quadrajet and having it rebuilt by Lars. eBay here I come! |
