Tires BFG or Kumho or General
 

Need front tires for the 85, lowered and worked, drive all year round. A lot of highway driving.

Thinking of the BF Goodrich G Force comp 2 A/S or the Kumho ECSTA PA51, General G Max AS-05

Anyone use these..

275 40 17 rated speed w.

Any feedback would be helpful - thanks

I put a set of BFG on my 84 and have had no problems with them. Been on since 2013. I went with the stock size 255/50-16.

I don't have any experience with these selections, although I do endorse the Riken Raptors that are also in the class of tires (but when I bought mine they were much cheaper). Looking at the treadware ratings for those choices (400, 420, and 500), the BFG would seemingly be the best performance tire. However, Tire Rack's test results don't seem to support that conclusion (not that they're bad, but they didn't have the lowest lap time). I would suggest calling Tire Rack and discussing with one of their techs. Unlike local shops, some of their techs really know what they're talking about.

I would go to the tire rack and shop for 275-40R17's and compare. plenty of information for research.

your 85 has a 17" upgrade, so I searched a 90 corvette. firehawk indy's seem to be top rated.

i'm on my second set of firehawks on my 85 - no complaints or issues. I've also had a set of kumho's and a set of BFG's. at least for me, with some mileage, the kumho's got a little squirrelly on wet roads. no real issues with BFG's. I've had coopers on my 90, and had some issues when cold. most likely, when I need new tires, i'll go with another set of firehawks. tires. for every brand of tire out there, you'll get 100's of opinions on this forum. take everyone's input with a grain of salt, and do your own research. :thumbs::thumbs:

(my 2-cents, FWIW) -- if only installing two tires, personally, i'd put the new ones on the rear, so if you can swap the out....

What are you running in the rear? I use discount tire direct for tires, they offer discount 100 off 400 coupon a couple times a year. Of the 3, I would go with the BFGs.

I have the BFG's 255x40x18 on my 86 (yes I changed the rims too) for about 2 years now and I'm very pleased with how they handle. Mine is a cruiser, particularly back roads and for that they perform great.

I have the BFG comp sport 2 and they do indeed handle very well -- I have about 9000 miles on them. I think they are loud and on road trips can get tiresome.They are sensitive to pressures and can change character by adjusting up or down.

I had bfg comp 2 they are warm weather tires. Ruined them when during second winter in Michigan.

I would definitely look at these, one member has them (drcook??) after having a problem with Nittos

They are newer technology than the others you listed, all season and not overly expensive (usually good rebates) and MADE IN AMERICA (I try as much as possible to buy American...either Cooper or Goodyear)

When I bought my 91 last year it needed tires and got the General G-Max RS based on reviews and price. The only thing I should have considered more was that they are summer tires so there are many days in winter I can't drive it. If I had thought more about it may have bought the General G-Max 05 instead so I could drive all winter.

I can say that the RS's are a great driving tire.

I have the BFG's on one of my cars. They are quiet, ride nice, good in the rain, and take the turns good. The only thing is that with 400lb/ft of torque it is hard to get a good launch.

Thanks ,for the input, and any new input… my Tire shop recommended the BF G force or the Cooper. ( he can get the most current dated tires)

I had Y (186mph) rated summer tires on the car. The rears are 335 -17", I have 500hp and a 6 speed +373 rear. The rears lasted less than the fronts :cool: Rims are AR. Very light but strong. The Air Cleaner fits into the scoop like the L88. (home built)

The issue was / is - I started driving the car more on the street and less on the fun tracks airports. Last fall we went out east on L.I. It was 60 deg. in the am when we left and 35 deg, with a light mist on the way home. It was a little tense sliding around with the summer tires. . Had to be real careful with the fun peddle.

I'm going to see him ( Tire shop) on Monday, if it stops raining. (I don't have the water diverters in the hood scoop so I don't want to have to change the filter)

When I purchased my first '88 in 2000 it came with a set of GY Eagle All-Weathers. They served my well on strip and street and, since I too drive all year, they served very well in rain, snow and the like.
I've since replaced tires with GY Eagles on both Vettes.

I would run the coopers. They're the only fully American tire company that doesnt suxk (Goodyear fails to not suck).

I have federal 595ss on mine. I wanted cheap tires for burnouts. They do that well. Grip is ok when its warm. But I was looking for a cheap and playful tire.

How wide are your wheels? If those tires are 335, the wheels look to be at least 11" wide. You aren't really going to put 275s on wheels that wide, are you?

I have the BFG's on both of my 85's. You can't go wrong with them no matter where you drive. Street, strip or track. I have done them all with both cars. JMHO.

I have the 275 on the front

The rears are all season. I just got a deal from a friend who never mounted them , and sold the car. They were 6 months old in his basement.

Both the front and rears are tight but do not rub...

BF Goodrich has factories in Alabama and Indiana.


When my tires wear out I will be moving to an 18 inch rim as there are more options in that size.
