Got no food, got no jobs, our brake calipers are falling off!
Sorry I couldn't resist, I will see myself out
Jokes aside, Casually driving around yesterday and all of a sudden massive grinding sound and feeling when I brake and turn. My front driver side top part of the caliper is hitting the rim. Brakes have not been worked on in over 5 years, no problems (no whistling). Only work is, I did have an alignment done this past Friday and was super happy my wheel was finally straight and then my brake caliper falls off. Going to take the wheel off soon to check it out. I am nervous the top bracket bolt snapped that needs to be torqued to 125 lbs. What am I in for? https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...708d0b72fb.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...a9093518ef.jpg |
You're in for a damaged wheel at least!!! That sucks. Was it at high speed?
That's just bizarre after 5 years supposedly untouched. It's possible it worked loose because it wasn't torqued properly way back then? Is the bolt gone? |
:lurk:

My guess is the bolt just backed out and is gone. Those bolts are pretty tough to break off. Should be an easy replacement. Use a little blue loctite on it also.
By the way, love the Dumb & Dumber reference....lol |
The front caliper bracket bolts can be torqued at 125 even by a lightweight like me because the wheels can be turned for access. It's the rears that are a pain if it's not on a lift. Definitely loctite.

I think the comments above are right in the mark. Good luck getting things fixed up.
|
Let's hope it hasn't 'snapped', even intact, they're difficult to remove.
|
I've had that happen once (on an F-Body but same brake setup). The bolt backed out and departed itself from what was apparently less than agreeable working conditions. Inside of the wheel was scratched up and caliper had some scratches, but nothing that made either unsafe. You're likely in for the same, it'll be purely cosmetic damage and a new bolt will fix things.

This happened to previous owner of my Z06 and the PO just had someone replace the missing bolt and scarred wheel, re-used same caliper. It worked fine but I just last weekend replaced the front calipers with new OEM calipers purchased from another forum member because I couldn't take the cosmetics of a scarred caliper any longer, even though I really couldn't see the damage with the wheel mounted unless under close scrutiny. I check torque on these mounts from time to time.

For my 11,000th post...
Yep, caliper mounting bolt was missing. Damage to wheel and caliper are not bad at all. Just a thin line on inside of wheel and outside of caliper. Will be giving Vettenuts a call in the morning. Do I torque both the top and bottom bolts to 125lbs? I will locite the bolts threads too. Is there just a bolt or is there a washer to? https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...a1dc05f806.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...3e703b669f.jpg |
Both bolts to same torque and threadlocker. GM says the bolts are single use, to be replaced each time they are removed. New bolts have a thread coating, and are not TTY, so thinking generally runs to cleaning, threadlocking, and torque with the originals. If VetteNuts doesn't have them, they can be had new from GMPartsDirect for $6 plus shipping.

Glad it's going to be an easy fix with minimal damage.
|
It's nice when things work out.

Glad to see the bolt didnt break off. I was going to say, there is just no way you could've broken it. It's a huge bolt.
|
This happened to me when I did new brake pads and rotors on my car. I didn't know you needed to use loctite on the bolts. It was a Sunday, so I just went to Home Depot and got a suitable length replacement bolt and a washer and replaced the one that was missing.
Scratched the inside of my wheel up pretty good, but you can't see it anyway. Definitely scary, though. |
