Texas drivers with antique plates, any problems

Thinking of registering my 1969 as an antique in Texas and acquiring a "year of manufacture" plate. Main reason is to avoid having to run a front plate, which I refuse to do unless it becomes a real issue locally. So far, so good.

Your experiences would be very helpful to my making a decision. I do drive her about once a week, if not more.

Also, a source for old 1969 plates at a reasonable price. So far I have found a set for $100.

Thanks so much.

I have had 72 plates on mine since I acquired the car. I have had no issues whatsoever. I just took the plates with me when I got my first registration and it they looked the and said it was no problem. I don't think there can be other cars registered with the same number though, not sure though.

The first license fee was for one year. After the first year, I renewed the registration for 5 years and it was very inexpensive.

79 L82 I’ve had antique plates for 9 yrs never a problem. Like not having to do safety inspec.

My dad has vintage/ year specific plates on all of his cars, and they are all registered as antiques. Just make sure to put the little antique tag on one of the license plate bolts. We don't have front plates on any of our antique registered cars and never gotten stopped/ticketed for it.

Our ‘72 Corvette and ‘77 Z/28 Camaro are both registered as antique autos in Texas. I drive each one 2-3 times a month or more (weather permitting) both around town or to a car event. I have had no problems of any sort in over ten years of driving with antique plates. As the antique registration requires only one plate mounted on the rear, I have a decorative plate mounted on the front of the Vette. Also no problems. Both cars have toll tags as well, and cruising the toll roads is great. Hope this helps !

Ten years ago the Antique plate was much more appealing.

My father has had antique plates on his LT-1 since the mid 90s, and have had them on my LS5 since 2017. To date the police haven’t paid any attention other than to give a thumbs up. Also much cheaper and less pain doing antique (roughly $10/year and no inspection).

No problem here. When I changed the title I also registered my 71 as an antique. I just took the single plate from the state. I was not required to get an inspection prior to the registration and it came with a 5 year sticker. I drove the car to work today and at closing time I saw two police Tahoes parked in front of my car for over 30 minutes. I figured if anything they may have commented on the window rattling exhaust coming out of the side pipes.... nothing said and got a thumbs up to boot.

Thank you all so much!

Think I will get the antique plate while I try and find some decent 1969 yom plates.
Also, gonna go this route on my zcar and 1980 Bronco. My cars are really getting old! HEEHEE. Not me.

Sincere thanks for the feedback.
