Hey all. Looking to buy this EBAY 69. What do you all think of the VIN stamp? Original or restamp?

kenba 05-16-2019 09:26 AM

Yu need to post the whole pad or at least the other half showing the build stamp.

Nice red/red convertible with white top, but I was surprised that the seller didn't post a photo of the entire pad.
I assume that it's an LM, L36, 427/390hp, Rochester Q-jet, Hydraulic Lifters & 4-Speed.

The VIN tag doesn't look right and rosette rivets were not used.

Yes, I agree. I have asked for a picture of the entire pad. I would think restamping a 390 car wouldnt be that common but people do strange things for money. I think I it looks good but I am just hoping for some other opinions as well.

I have requested a picture of the entire pad and picture of the cast date of the block.

Good eye. You are absolutely right. The VIN tag rivets aren't right.

These kinds of issues make me nervous.

Yes, but it's just money. It's not like its somebody's life or limb. It's a nicely restored car and I'm just seeking opinions from people that know these cars. In the grand scheme of things I might still buy it if I find out it's a restamp and the VIN tag has been messed with. It's not like it's a L89 car a guy is asking $110,000 for. If I buy it and find out its bogus I would always disclose that to the next buyer. I just would prefer to know before I spend my money. If I'm wrong I'm out 10 K or so. Sucks, but not the end of the world. I still would have a really nice 69 Vette!

I have zero issue with restamp motor, fake trim tag. Messing with that vin tag is a federal crime. At the very least of this particular car, verify vin from frame.

Yes, I want to believe that there was a rust issue on the pillar and they just took it off for a repair. Unfortunately that may not have been the case....

Is that the blue restomod? That's pretty sweet!

joewill 05-16-2019 02:13 PM

vin tag is a killer, you need to do real research to make sure that you can even title that car let alone resell it....
46K for a real red red big block roadster with a questionable vin tag ( surprised the rivets got by the judges in 2010 ) is about the ceiling for this car.
rarely see a car bid up this high.
there are 9 corvettes on ebay that are 1969 427 roadsters right now, they made bunches of them... you should be able to find one for that price that has zero excuses.

I agree 100% with what you are saying. There are certainly a lot of 69 big lock roadsters out there. I wish the Red 69 L89 that is on Ebay now was a better car. I would be interested in that if it was real. It has been discussed on here before. Lots if issues with that one. Paperwork appears to be reproduction, engine stamp also looks funny, 72 and later shift plate. Aftermarket wheels and headers. Leather interior with vinyl on the trim tag. The list goes on and on.

Greg 05-16-2019 02:49 PM

Great looking car, very nice restoration. I think the engine stamp looks fine. If the VIN matches the title and the car is currently titled, what's the issue?
I would have no problem at all buying this car. Don't let paranoia be your guide.

It is against the law to take the Vin tag off and reattach it to the same car. Or take the Vin tag off and reattach it to a different windshield pillar that you installed in the same car. In this case you want to see pictures of the number on the frame and the number on the transmission. I don't like the number on the engine. It's too clean. It's too pretty. Should be 50 years of aging their. It looks like it was stamped last week.

CanadaGrant 05-16-2019 04:00 PM

The numbers and showing M font look the same as on my 69 427 LM engine. The vin tag rivets are not.

cv67 05-16-2019 06:51 PM

What do other improvements have to do with the VIN or engine stamp? Maybe the guy did some improvements big deal.
