slight whirring sound in power steering right turns
Whenever the PS is turned the least amount to the right there is a slight whirring. It continues until the load comes off. It occurs whether actually driving or just turn the wheel when stationary.
History of the system: Pump is original to the car, 1980, never rebuilt. Control valve and power cylinder were both rebuilt by CSSB about 2 years ago but less than 100 miles driving on them. All other steering linkage parts are original, about 90,000 miles. Possible causes? |
bump
I had no idea this would be such a mystery - 80 reads and no recommendation :confused2:

I would change the pump

Common sense says that if there was something wrong with the pump it would do it when the steering was turned either way. This not being the case, I think their might be something wrong (restricting) with the steering valve....just guessing though.

But it's worth dropping a note off to CSSB to get their thoughts. |
Resolution - Started car today and sound was still there. Drove for for 4 or 5 miles, when I got back I realized the sound was gone. Best guess is some air which worked itself out.

Air would have been my guess. Usually makes noise when the fluid is low and the piston is extended (left turn I think), Easy to guess now that you’ve already solved it but make sure you check the fluid level.
