88 35th Edition - what to look for?

Hey Guys,

I think I may have found "the one". I've been looking everywhere for an 88 35th Edition and I think I found it - its about 4 hours away, but I dont care. Im trying to get a road trip planned to go see it.

For those with 88's - can you tell me things to look for, things to test, things to listen for? I dont want to make an 8 hour round trip just to find issues later that I could have detected.

The seller said its in near perfect condition (and the pictures show he's being truthful), he already told me the seat bladders dont work and he said sometimes the speakers pop...both of which I know are common. He also said he didn't convert the AC but it blows cold. The only thing not stock is the exhaust which was upgraded with a Dyna Flow setup (I think that was the brand he stated).

Any pointers or advice would be most appreciated.

I did the same thing when I bought my 95. It was 4 hours away as well. What I did not do, but have in the past with other cars was find a local shop that would do a quick once over on the car. Get it up on the lift and if time permits, run a diagnostic on the car. It has worked in my favor each time. Some will say, time permitting, do a transmission fluid check, oil test, basically get knee deep in the car. It all depends on how sure you want to feel with your purchase or how surprised you want to be in the future. I would at the very least get it in the air. You can tell A LOT about a car from that.
You may also want to look in the local forums and see if there is a forum member nearby that can do a little scouting for you.

Minor things...make sure all emblems/moldings are on the car as they’re not easy to get. Fuel injectors can leak creating a difficult hot start. Is it a manual or auto. They didn’t make many 4+3 35th models. Check all of the weather stripping as they crack, can get hard and loose. Depending on miles check the steering rack and suspension. The L98 is a pretty bulletproof engine but uts performance isn’t the best. Good luck and keep us posted!

on a different note what number is the car?? Mine is 1847

Ditto what 95LT and MRANT mentioned.

Also - regarding the emblems - look closely at the 35th Anniversary emblems on the front fenders. I've seen some where they are missing the middle part (checkered flag/bowtie) or that middle part is upside down. These emblems are very hard to find.

I've got #1941.

Aside from checking all emblems, outside (front, rear & sides) & inside (horn & build # on console) make sure all functions work.
Otherwise It's like checking out any other '88 Vette.

Hope it's the one you want, good luck.

Make sure it has its number on the console. Also check condition of center console armrest door. No one makes a white one:)

Yes - it does have the number on the console (#1094). It also has the complete badge next to the number and the badges on the left and right side of the front fenders. Ill definitely check the armrest's lid
