I honestly never paid much attention!

So I noticed while pumping gas that I was being gouged for 93 octane:rofl: My vette is a toy so when I fill up it was mostly at this station as it is on my way into town and was very convenient. Wow have I been paying for convenience:ack:
yes I know it’s my own fault but man what a price difference. I feel kind of dumb for never noticing before, I generally just fill up at a top tier station wherever, not driving out of my way or spending much time thinking about it but this place will never see my Vette again. Check out this pic, pretty sure this is not the average price difference between grades.

Curious to know how common this is and how many people got burned before they noticed? as only the lower grade is on most advertising signs......

we have ONE station with 93 and it is 4.50 plus a gallon :willy::willy:

crf450x 06-11-2019 09:42 PM

That’s ridiculous. Here it’s about $2.30 for regular and $3 for premium. I remember when I first started driving (only 8 years ago) I refused to stop anywhere that had more than $0.10 between grades. Good thing I got over that or I’d be making my own gas.

C5MSG2004Vert 06-11-2019 09:52 PM

In NJ the robber barons are getting 50 to 60 cents a gallon for 93 octane. Last week in Staten island New York the gasoline difference between regular and premium was only $0.30. they figured out they can rip you off for a premium.

K-Spaz 06-11-2019 09:58 PM

93 is about $0.60 a gallon more around here. It's available at every station though. I even have a station a couple blocks from work that has no ethanol fuel. They're a little proud of that at around $4 a gallon but I suppose that's not that bad.

FX VETTE 06-11-2019 10:03 PM

91 octane is the highest they sell in CO. It’s usually .40 - .60 cents higher than the midgrade

Verrückt ZR1 06-11-2019 10:07 PM

That's the reason I'm switching to e85! :yesnod:

rrichar2591 06-11-2019 10:09 PM

Wow you pay a dollar more a gallon to even go from 87 to 89 octane. It would be interesting to see what other stations in the area are charging.

lewislgZ06 06-11-2019 10:17 PM

93 octane averages around $0.60 a gallon more than regular here in middle TN too.
My engine is tuned for 93, so that’s all I run in it. It’s at every station here.
My Vette is a weekend warrior, but I still use the Gas Buddy app (free) to scout gas prices. There’s always that one gas station that is charging ridiculous prices for their gas over the others.

knewblewkorvette 06-11-2019 10:27 PM

Remember the days when the grades were all just 10 cents apart and no ethanol? For instance, 87 octane was $1.25, 89 octane would be $1.35, and 91 octane would be $1.45 Whatever happened? The OP's example of mid-grade being $1.00 more than low grade is complete BS. No way should the gap be that big.
It's not that bad here in Iowa where ethanol is heavily subsidized. There is about 30 to 35 cents between grades with the lower grade at $2.40 and dropping. I ALWAYS put in 93 octane when possible. My 99 is supercharged and likes it. So does my turbocharged Eagle Talon. I put it in my 02 just because I can  I put the crappy 87 octane in my Expeditions. It pisses me off that they are pushing 15% ethanol here though, some gas stations already have it. My Expeditions (97 and 00) say not to use anything more than 10% ethanol. I'm against ethanol period.

My garage queen doesn’t get 93 octane. It runs on Stabil, Techron, and octane booster. .

Pounder 06-11-2019 11:06 PM

I have to run Octane booster as well !!! adds about 12 a tank :ack::ack:

_zebra 06-11-2019 11:12 PM

only 2 stations in town with 93 (rest are 91), but they ain't gouging THAT bad. holy cow!
but i gotta pay it for the boost.

ALLEGRO 06-12-2019 12:24 AM

In the Memphis area they get "about" $1,00 more for 93 than they do for 87. What a sham !!

laurent_zo6 06-12-2019 01:07 AM

Here in DC area (Md suburb) the spread is average 40c. You can get an app called Gas Buddy which shows you gas prices all over the US.

I do remember the days well...It lasted for a long time with a .10 margin in between grades. What I can surmise is this. More cars on the road, the speed limits have gone up, and the manufacturers have made more cars with higher performing engines, to outdo the competition. That goes for the lowly powered family grocery getter to the flagship performance or luxury offering. What was the National Speed limit when the 1984 Corvette debuted? 55 MPH. You had a 205 HP car out of the factory then. Fast forward to 2019, and you have a Honda Mini Van with a 3.5L V6 churning out 280HP. I think the gap in grade pricing is ridiculous and gouging however, in all honesty that is a pittance compared to what pharmaceutical companies charge for some of their products. 1000% or more in some cases....Now that is in your face rape but, somehow they get away with it. Just my .02

This is not the norm around here, this is ridiculously higher than other stations in the area..... it’s not a mistake either....I noticed it the time before when I actually filled up, this time I did not.

we have 93 everywhere and it’s not priced like the elsewhere that I have noticed, I just can’t believe this stations prices and how many times I filled up without looking. :ack:

Just out of curiosity, what's the octane rating of the "non ethanol" that you can get? For several years, there were stations in my area that had 92-93 octane, non-ethanol gas, but beginning earlier this year, they knocked it back to 90 octane. However, there are several more stations selling it, now.

I don't know for sure but I think it's 93. I'd have to go check. I don't need it in my C6 so I I seldom head there for gas. I have a station a few hundred yards from home and they've got the best price on 93 so I go there.
