Options for non-functioning 84-89 instrument cluster

I constantly see what seem like bargains on C4's and I've been thinking about getting one just for grins to go along with my '80. However I'm concerned about that digital display on the years that have them. How repairable are they? What are the options if it goes bad?

there are two types of the digital dash. 84-89, AKA, atari dash, and the later analog/digital variation. they are very repairable, however, costs vary. best guess - $200-$400 (if you send it out). pretty much the forum go-to place for repair is www.batee.com. there is also a series of videos by batee on youtube that covers all aspects of repair - removal, troubleshooting, repair, etc. well worth watching -

Another vote for Bryan at batee and his crazyuncleburton YouTube videos. I had my 86 cluster repaired last year ... great work.

As long as the LCD panels aren't broken they are pretty easy to repair and restore with the parts from batee.

Are you talking about putting one in your 80? If so, that's going to be a real challenge due to size and spacing. If you are talking about as wall art. The only hard part there will be getting it to display something other than full boxes. It works by sending signals to the LCD panels to turn them on and off. You'll need to decipher that schematic an put low voltage to those panels to get it to display something readable. Doable but will take some electrical skills.

No, pondering getting a C4.

There are also services/DIY options for LED’s with various color choices love that “Atari” dash it was the main reason why I chose my 89’ over a later C4.

In that case go for it. Go for the nicest you can find/afford. Nice versions are real cheap right now and fixing them up is real $$$. I probably have $12K now into my car with new parts for it to still be a $5K car :-(

Hard for me to say as an 85 owner but I would look for something newer. They made a lot of changes after 85 that I really wish I had. The better heads, ECU, brakes, etc...
