Battery relocation
Has anyone relocated the battery into the spare wheel area?
|
Interesting concept. Shouldn't be that hard. Its not that much farther back to that area. What's the plan? Splice / solder two cable extensions or buy all new cable?
A battery hold-down bracket could be mounted to the bottom of the tub. Your biggest hardship would be lowering the tub to monitor the cable connections. A sealed AGM battery would be in order because of the angle of the unit when lowering the tub. Weight & height would be about the same as a spare tire. However, if using a Top-Post model, make sure its impossible for the post to make contact with the frame or gas tank with some type of battery cover. |
I think it would be harder to get to and harder to put a charger on if needed. Unless you have a lift, of course.
Don't think I would want it right under the gas tank.. |
It is rare that the battery would fail violently, but you would have a killing machine if it ignited the gas tank. How about the jack compartment to help balance the weight in the car.

FWIW, I did what doorgunner mentioned. I moved my battery to the jack compartment for better L/R weight distribution. (However, the stock location is probably better if you have converted your car to RHD.) |
The reason for moving the battery is simply to get extra room, and contemplating dropping a sub behind the drivers seat. Plenty of trucks have a battery tray hanging from the chassis so why not!!! As for. charging / testing an anderson plug tucked behind the bumper would be all that's needed.. It's Winter here and just thinking of something to do.

Here's a way to get a bunch of room- without a lot of work-
I used two 6 volt batteries in series- EXACTLY the same specs as a 12V- CCA and reserve- As far as jump starting- I added a positive starter cable terminal- under the hood - right to the starter-a bunch of newer cars use this- got mine from the junkyard- https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...1f82da23d4.jpg It has a nifty cover that protects it https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...962ae79048.jpg |
