Got back in my Fiero this week
 

So since I got the corvette (94 auto coupe) my fiero (2m4 auto) has been sitting. But now with the corvette undergoing some work (stereo install), plus it being a bit thirsty and the fiero needed to be moved from where it was sitting I decided to take the 2m4 to work. And it was surprisingly pleasant. I knew getting in would be much easier but the roominess of the cockpit... Actually having room for my feet. And it still feels nimble. And the suspension! They're worlds apart here with the Fiero actually coming out on top.

Now, for performance the Corvette has the Fiero beat by miles. And for long drives I would definitely still take the corvette. The fiero's 3-speed automatic is just awful for anything faster than about 50mph and the fueltank doesn't hold a lot of fuel, plus the cargo space is limited (though far less so than soft-top corvettes). Different cars for similar purposes, it's a good thing I don't have to choose between them for now.

The fiero sure was popular when it released. I believe over 100k units sold in the first year which i believe was 1984.

and thats without power steering for the first year...

i remember my mom wanted one back in the day but she wasnt strong enough to steer the vehicle at parking speeds.

that fiero sure was a looker, i remember being sad as she chose a slick top white nissan 300zx 2 seater over the red fiero she had a hard time parking because of no power steering.

if i remember correctly gm eventually put power steering in the fiero...

fwiw i always thought it was a pretty car and the final year 1988 with the revised suspension and v6 power was a hell of a sports car back in tje day...

ive heard the second generation fiero was a hell of a car as well. Too bad it got killed off ...

i think cuv s were in full swing at that point...

wasnt it 1984 that the four door jeep cherokee chief launched cuv s as “cool” surburban new station wagons with awd and a cool look.

seems 2 seat sports cars lost that epic battle to sport cuvs as far as profitable unit sales over the decades...

still that fiero was a cool looking ride.

during those early years i had a turbocharged rear mid engine scorpion ...and I always thought although a little slow ..,the fiero was a looker for sure,

I try to drive mine at least once a week (86 V6 4 spd) and it puts a smile on my face every time.

Saw two young girls in one last night. It was a later one. Done up quite nice. Mostly stock but a few little extras.

I've really got the itch to drag my 86 Fiero GT with the 3800 supercharged swap out of storage. With two Caddies and a Vette in the garage, it'll kick another Caddy out into the driveway, but still....

That was typical for GM, in those days. Throw a "parts-bin" special together, on the cheap, to test the waters. They did the same with the Corvair….first gen 'Vairs were sharp looking, but sketchy handling. Second gen 'Vairs had a Corvette based rear suspension in them, and were "corner carvers", but all the bad publicity by then had killed the car,

I had an '88 GT, and I tell ya, that thing handled like it was riding a rail.

A friend of mine had one of those, "back in the day". I helped him retrieve a car, once, and I drove his Fiero back to Rochester, from Watkins Glen, while he drove the car we went to get. It was a cool car to drive, and as you say, it drove like it "was on rails".....
