Battery Door Seal

Was the foam seal on the battery door dropped after a certain year? I like the idea of it, but don't see it in my AIM ('77).

Anyone have some info on this seal?

Thanks,
Adam

My '71 has what looks like the original black foam seal.

Hi Adam, I have a ‘77 and I’ll take a look at mine. I’m on the road right now, but will be home Saturday evening and will post what I find. IIRC, there’s no foam on mine, but I’ll have to verify that.

Thanks for the responses guys! Guess I'll go ahead an install one. Seems odd to seal that door when it's just an open area to the other two doors without seals? I'm sure they had their reasons for it.

I am pretty sure it was done to seal off any hydrogen sulfide gas from the older lead acid batteries that had vents.
my 1971 has the seal, and small hoses that attached to the top of the battery to :vent: under the car.

modern sealed batteries don't need this venting. I think.

That's what I was thinking too. Seems odd though, because I "think" GM started using the "maintenance free" batteries in '71? Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.
