So what's changed?

Why is the Corvette going mid engine this year? What prevented the Chevy from going mid engine in prior generations?

Global warming caused it to go mid engine.

We did not have global warming in prior generations.

True

That's very true! How astute of you to know that!

GM pushed the FE formula with the C7 Z06 and went ham on the C7 ZR1. It has reached its limits and the only way forward for better performance is to go ME. That's my 2c.

Totally WRONG !!

My brother who is a big time engineer for GM told me that it was GLOBAL WARMING that caused the Corvette to go mid-engine. My brother is the main engineer at the building where they C8 Corvette is being developed. He has full access to the building and is the chief engineer for the facility where they are developing the new Corvette. And my brother told me that GOLBAL WARMING was the reason GM went to a mid engine design.

Oh and my brother is one of the best building engineers GM has. He can turn on the heat the building, he knows how to change the overhead light bulbs, and can even shovel snow since he is the building engineer. Some people who are rude call him a Janitor. He is a building engineer !!

I wish there were a Down Vote button for a post like this!

How many times has this been discussed? :smash:

Going ME is the only way to make this car evolve and keep it at the top level it has always been

Sin City 06-14-2019 12:26 PM

Not global warming. I think is was socialism. :)

In all seriousness, it really was the cost of retooling to this new platform that stopped them last time. I think Chevy realizes if they don't change its a slow decline in sales for the Vette going on.

It's always about the money.

Dougpaper 06-14-2019 12:29 PM

ZR! will now be named the AOC

PCMIII 06-14-2019 12:39 PM

Actually Global Warming is the issue. Corvette needs to get much more fuel efficient to meet government standards that were enacted to reduce CO2 emissions.

The C8 will eventually be a plug in hybrid with the front wheels driven electrically. 1000 hp will be easily achievable along with 50% better fuel efficiency.

Zora tried to influence GM to introduce a mid-engine car almost from when he started working with the Corvette team. It was too much of a change for the conservative GM management. Also, the cost would have been substantial, something that didn't fit in with the market Corvette was targeting. As an example, over the years many Corvette parts are interchangeable with Chevy sedan and truck parts which keeps costs down. Corvette is more about performance on a budget instead of performance at any cost.
The mid-engine was considered when the C5 was in early development, but once again keeping costs down dictated a more conservative approach. Moving the transmission to the rear helped Corvette keep costs down while attaining a better weight distribution.
Actually, the C7 was supposed to be a mid-engine design. This time the bankruptcy problems came into play and GM abandoned all Corvette development sometime around 2008/2009. When the bankruptcy advisory team noted that Corvette made money, and that GM had better keep in on the market, development resumed, but putting a mid-engine design in place by 2013 (for MY 2014) was not possible so the design was shelved until after the FE C7 was launched.
In my opinion they're launching a mid-engine car now because further development of the FE car would not yield substantial improvements thereby resulting in slow sales.

Actually socialism was the reason GM went with hydroformed rails on the frame of the C5

thill444 06-14-2019 02:49 PM

I think this is setting GM up for a more dynamic sports car that will translate even better to EV down the road.

Whats Changed you ask? Well you know you have a Female running GM now, Mary Barra insisted on the mid engine layout so she would have a nice big frunk to store her jumbo Kotex box's in for long trips.

Are you implying she has too much junk in the trunk?

Moving the engine to the back causes other issues like paint and transmission flaws to go away.

You've made too much sense for the forum. Be prepared to be burned at the stake.

I agree. that is just way too much non-emotional, accurate, factual information. It does not belong here on this forum.

This forum is for discussions, debating, arguing or even better out right name calling fighting !!

Sheesh, get it straight. ;)

Have a good one,
Mike
