Track Days - Wilwood vs AP Racing
 

Has anyone tried both? How do they compare?

I'm looking at swapping out the Z07 CCBs and don't see much online about the Wilwoods. I run 19 inch track wheels, so clearance should be okay. Thanks.

You might want to try this question in the road racing section of the general area.

I had the Wilwoods on my C6Z and liked them. There was only one troublesome spot and that was with the hat used for the rear kit that placed the rotor too close to the tie rod end. I think that came about because they used standard parts to make a kit that fit. Wilwood's method of attaching the caliper to the knuckle provides the ability to shim it outward if required, however, the hat they chose only worked if no shims were used. I don't know whether the C7 rear kit changes that. I looked online at their website and saw the rear hat had a 0.73 offset which is greater than the 0.69 offset used on my C6Z kit. The C7 toe link is mounted differently than the C6 tie rod is so there might not be an issue but it is something that should be checked.

When I took the ceramic brakes off my 15 Z06/Z07 I decided to go with the Essex AP kit that had 1 inch thick front pads. The Wilwood calipers hold you to thinner pads although pad volume isn't too bad. However, I do know the 1 inch thick pads used with the AP kit seem to last forever while the 6617 Wilwood pad doesn't, although for a while Wilwood was offering a caliper that would accept a .8 inch thick pad (6620) and that pad also wore very well (I used the 7420 shape in the H compound that had the same .8 in thickness in SL6 calipers on my C5Z and could get 10 track days out of a set of those pads). The Wilwood slotted GT 72 rotors are excellent rotors and hold up as well as the AP racing rotors.

As for pad compounds they are more limited than the AP calipers will be. Wilwood has two great track compounds (their H and A pads, I preferred the H's Vs the A's because the A's were a little too aggressive for me).

+1 for AP Racing. I have Girodisc rotors with Ferodo DS1.11 pads. My dad and good friend have the AP Racing kits with DS1.11 pads. The Girodisc rotors with stock calipers are fine, but the stopping power and endless solid pedal feel of the AP kit is certainly superior. If you’re willing to spend the money, I do not think there is a better braking solution on the market than the AP kit.
