65 Spare Tire Carrier

Was it painted or left bare? If painted what color black? Thanks

In 63 they were bare fiberglass. Only the metal reinforcing rods were painted — black.

Can’t say if the later ones were the same. But I believe so.

Yep want to know what the 65 year model was. Thanks

65 was all natural except for the steel V bar, which was semi-flat black.

Ok thank you

The '66 looks to be all natural fiberglass as well, but a darker shade of gray/black fiberglass than the '63 & '64.

Sweet Jesus Gusto, that's one incredibly clean underside. Ever drive it? LOL

I do believe it gets driven, a bit, unfortunately not by me...

It was listed back in December 2018 on BAT where it was bid to $100,000 but didn't reach reserve. It is such a great looking car that I saved some of the pictures for reference purposes. It's an L72, 4-speed out of Yorba Linda, California and was refurbished in 2008.

After taking my off the shelf and taking it apart, notice the upper tub had damage where the lid sits. Thought i could reglass that area/patch it but decided to buy a new one from a vendor.

I received the new one yesterday....Why doesn't these repops come with the holes already drilled out? Is this how the factory did it, just put it up in place and screwed it thru the fiberglass?

Best part about the repos is that a radial spare tire fits in them.

BrotherVette 07-11-2019 07:36 PM

This radial spare reportedly fits in the OE tub.

Im running 17” wheels, so my “real” spare wont fit, but ive got a stock rim and tire ill be putting in the carrier

what was the purpose of this part of the v-bar?

You put the jack handle into it to let the tire out and to close it up. The bolt holding the the bottom lid is loosened, the bottom is lifted up and the bolt is disengaged from the lid. I just worked on mine today. It was covered with undercoating. I think it was done by the dealership. WHAT A MESS!

That's the receiver for the trailer hitch bar. Don't do it, it was a joke. Don't do it. Like Dave Tracy said, it's for lowering and lifting the spare with the jack handle/lug wrench.

Frankie the Fink 07-14-2019 07:21 AM

Its explained (and illustrated) on the jacking instruction placard on the underside of the jack storage compartment lid...

Yep same here, either a light coat of undercoat or someone sprayed it with flat black paint. I was able to get some of it off but still looks like crap. Going to try and work on it some more, Might just repaint it before I put the new v bar on.

Patrick, if it is undercoat, some mineral spirits or Naptha should remove it. If they don't, it's very likely some type of paint and you can use normal paint stripper to remove it.

Good luck... GUSTO

Hey Gusto, I was thinking of trying the same thing. I’m about to head to the store now as that’s the one thing I don’t have in my paint cabinet.

Id rather try to keep it correct than paint over it.

I thought those rivets would be a pain to remove but I literally took a tiny chisel and knocked the heads off with no damage.

Thanks!
