Changing Key Cylinder

Hey guys, I am new on here. I am in the process of getting an 84, however the current owner has lost the keys to the car. How hard is it to change out, or the steps involved, for removing the ignition key cylinder? I'd like to be able to unlock the steering to load it on the trailer. Thank you!

Remove lock cylinder:
Remove steering wheel (steering wheel puller)
Remove lock plate (use lock plate depressor to get snap ring off)
Disconnect turn signal wiring (need extra wire to get turn signal switch out of the way)
Remove turn signal switch
Remove/unscrew locking pin and remove lock cylinder

Best of luck getting it going!

Thank you so much!

Why not talk to a locksmith? A good locksmith probably has encountered this more times than they care to admit. I've seen a good locksmith make a key for a lock when none was available to duplicate. I've also seen cylinders replaced without changing the whole lock mechanism or even the pins in the lock replaced via disassembly.
Good luck.

That is definitely a good plan AFTER he gets it home. He stated he wants to be able to get it on the trailer. In my mind, it would be a lot faster and much cheaper to walk into a locksmith with the tumbler in your hand vs. paying the dude to make a house call.

I don't think you can get the tumbler out of the column without having the proper key in the tumbler, even if you disassemble the column.

Talk to a locksmith before attempting. May be easier and more cost effective if you do. I did and I was pleased.

If you have the title perhaps a dealer (or locksmith) can make a new key.
