Best 1.6 rocker options for LT1 stock cam
Hi Folks,
Car is 1996 CE LT1 A4, 84 kmiles. Looking for performance vs. $$ for 1.6 rocker options (long slot, roller tip, full roller, etc.). Engine is bone stock at this point as far as I know (peering in the oil filler hole I see stock rockers :). I realize I will need upgraded springs (LT4 at a minimum). Used to run 1.52 roller tips on a 383 back in the 80s with no durability issues. What is reasonable to expect for HP gain for each option (1.6 long slot vs. 1.6 roller tip vs. 1.6 full roller)? Also, I know for the Crane LT4 rockers, I need to grind off the oil drippers in the valve covers. Do any of the 1.6 rocker options allow me to re-use my stock rocker covers as-is? Thanks in advance!! That'a a minor upgrade. Maybe 10hp? Others can chime in on that.
The 1.6 Comp Cams Roller tip rockers will clear your existing valve covers. Make sure they are narrow body for your center bolt valve covers, and self aligning if you don't have guide plates. |
Thanks, appreciate it. I had good luck with the 1.52s 30 years ago.

I put on some kind of steel 1.6:1 rockers vs aluminum ones. This was in 2012
they claimed since steel is stronger they could make it lighter than aluminum. no idea if marketing BS, but they have done fine on my afr 195 comp eliminator heads and 6500 rpm shifts. |
nobody seems to like 'em but me; on a budget, I like roller tipped (not full roller) rockers; maybe not a big (if any) horsepower gain, but the roller tip takes the side load off the valve stem imparted by a plain stamped rocker for better valve guide wear.

Thanks...me too! That's why I originally put them in my 383 back in the 80s, since I had seen my original set of stock 350 heads that ended up on the 383 with the original valve guides worn in an oblong pattern. Also because I couldn't afford full rollers back then :)
