Lug Nut Bolt Broke - How screwed am I?
 

Taking off the wheels of my 88 35th Anniversary to clean them, I snapped a lug nut bolt in 1/2 (I wasn't even using a gun). Is this an easy fix? Anyone have thoughts if this is a DIY project or should I just take it to my dealer?

Can I safely drive with only 4 bolts if I take it slow and only go a short distance?

Easy. Whack the bejeezus out of it w/a hammer where it's broken. In one, SHARP blow, it should come right out the back side of the hub. Go get a new wheel stud (and lug, if you can't extract that stud form the nut) and push it back in from the rear, pound it w/a punch the best you can...then suck it in tight with the lug nut. :thumbs:

Broken lug was covered in like the first week in basic auto waaay back in hs. :lol:

4 lugnuts are more than adequate. Drive whatever speed you want. A couple of seasons ago, NASCAR relaxed the lugnut rule and everyone was driving 190 - 200 MPH with 4 lugnuts. This also involved massive side forces in the corner. Not one wheel was lost the entire season.

Just hung up with my local CJ Tires - $35 to fix this...(PHEW!!!)... Taking my baby there now...:thumbs:

Not a big deal to fix, I had a couple of bad ones on my 35th. Bought new ones and replaced them all.

You should have taken it back to whoever last had the wheels and tires off cause they cross threaded it. Unless that was you. If I had a dollar for every stud I had to replace when I worked at the tire shop. Back when I started you still had a few cars that had left hand thread. Old Mopars. We had a new kid working for us and he didn't know about left hand thread. He finally came to me and said, "we've got a problem. I'm down to two studs left on this one wheel they keep breaking." I took the gun and switched the direction and handed it back to him.

I've driven on three lug nuts before. It would have been fine as long as you were being too hard on the car. I've had several break over the years and what you paid was spot on for what I paid. Glad you were able to get it taken care of quickly.
