Gas tank dress-up
 

This won't go over well at an NCRS judging, but I'll offer it for those who might be interested. My original gas tank was nice inside, solid outside with no pitting, but did have some surface rust and discoloration. I had already gone over it with a Scotchbrite pad and then sprayed clear satin, but the thing still looked a bit ratty.

I had an extra spray can of Cast Blast from doing the drive shaft and half shafts. The color itself was not too far off so I painted the tank, then got some clear gloss and gave it 2 coats of that. The result looks fine for a driver and gives it a little extra protection as well. I think it looks a bit lighter and glossier in person but this should give you the idea.

Looks great. I do enjoy my NCRS membership and all the friends, information and good advice I have received from them over the years - but unless and until you plan to enter your car for NCRS judging, there's no requirement for you to keep your car looking " just as bad as it came from St. Louis." :D

I agree, I have incredible admiration and respect for those who have the patience and determination to go the NCRS judging route. But that's just not me, and I'm trying to strike a balance between looking reasonably decent, yet not wanting to obsess about exact color, sheen, markings etc. What I did was cheap, easy, yet I think the end result is very acceptable for what I will be doing with it. If this helps someone else, all the better.

The tank looks perfect for your (or my) use. I too am an NCRS member but have never had my 67 judged (except by the guy who inspected it during a pre-purchase inspection --- he is an NCRS master judge for 67s). Once installed, nobody but you will ever glimpse it again.
