Rear driver wheel ticking
16, M7, z51 with mag. At takeoff, in first gear, rear driver side wheel ticks several times. Happens when I gas and when I let off the accelerator. Doesn’t happen any other time, silent otherwise. It’s like the tick that many complain about coming from the front wheels when brake dust gets between rim and rotor (not to be confused with the wheel chatter that so many freak out about)
starting happening after some hard driving last week, hard acceleration and hard stops. Is it possibly the brake dust culprit that makes the front rims “tick”? Anyone else experience this in the rear wheels? I’ll pull the rear rim off this weekend and clean it, just figured I’d ask first |
I don't know about the C7, but on my C5 I've had to have the rear axle nuts retorqued a couple times in the last 18 years because of what seemed much like you describe with your car. It seems I've read similar about a very few C7s on here, as well. Just a thought. All the best.

Thank you Avanti. Just so I’m understanding correctly, are we talking spindle?

Update:
hubnut torqued to spec (184lb ft) rear rims removed, cleaned. Rear rotor hats and hubs cleaned, free of any brake dust and debris Tried a separate set of rims (in case a wheel issue). The ticking at start and stop still there. Lifted car. Shut off all nannies. Got it up to 20mph. Not a single click. So issue is only under load beginning to suspect CV haft shaft or much more unlikely, the hub. Please share your thoughts. Any ideas? |
This.
had same problem a few months ago, they retorted the axle nuts and the problem was fixed. |
Avanti and Ammo, (Along with a couple guys here I PMed)
Thank you guys for pointing me in the right direction. Here’s the update: I torqued the hubnuts myself to 184lb ft. (The GM spec), yet didn't resolve anything. Finally, begrudgingly, took the car to a local dealer who’s shop foreman is a certified vette tech. He was very familiar with the c5-c7 vette hubnut issues. Told me that just tightening won’t do. Hubs must be pulled, cleaned, inspected, then reinstalled and torqued. He did this a couple of weeks ago. This helped tremendously, but under certain conditions (like heavy acceleration), the ticks were again clearly heard. He reached out to GM and they instructed him to replace both hubnuts. Apparently (and I’m not sure if this applied to the c5 and c6), but on the c7, the hubnuts are one time use and should not be re-used as they “stretch”. Went in, waited while he replaced both hubnuts (the new nuts look very different) and I’ve been testing ever since. I accelerated in every fashion for 2 hours, not a peep out of the rear hubs now. Again, thank you guys for all your help. |
I need the rear axle nut part number. My left rear was retorqued and I’ve driven the car about 500 miles and the noise is back. 184ft lb. just need the axle nut part number.

here’s my receipt. It sounds like yours have an issue holding torque too. Part numbers listed |
There’s a TSB for this issue: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...a_721L93LNsZVE

Thank you for posting, but that is the brake dust related TSB. The hub nuts are a separate issue, far less common

Thanks for the post. Weird that’s the part number they installed. Because every online GM parts catalog I put the part number into, says it doesn’t fit the car. I’ll call and order one so I can get the nut swapped out. The noise is annoying.
Thanks, again. 👌👌👌 |
Don't you also have to use Loctite so they don't lose torque later down the road?
