Grampa's toy
Been working on this for 12 years finally got it done. Had to retire to finally get it knocked out but... it's done and passed AZ dyno emissions test . Engine is 4 bolt, zero decked, .051 head gasket, Forged Pistons, ETEC 170 heads, Edelbrock VORTEC base, ASM runners, TPIS 52mm throttle body, plenum ported to match, ZZ-6 crate cam, roller lifters, Comp ultra gold roller rockers, Z-28 oil pump, aluminum welded radiator, edelbrock water pump, got rid of the stock oil cooler cuz it leaked and mixed my fluids replaced it with oil to air cooler. Used the stock 91 exhaust tubes followed with a complete Magna-Flo system. Think that;s about it for the motor. Had ZF Doc blueprint the ZF6, replaced the dual mass setup with a Carolina clutch stage 2 single mass conversion. Feels really strong. Going to put some miles on it then see how it does on the quarter mile at Wild Horse Pass. Scott Hansen BIN for the new setup.
Had the headers ceramic coated, the shields powder coated and the plenum powder coated. Replaced all the electrical connectors in the engine bay also. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...64ed00c57d.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...16c6445884.jpg |

This project started with a blown head gasket on the L-98. I started tearing it apart to repair it then kept looking at the new cars on the road, heck even my Impala has a 300 HP, V6! Just didn't seem right having a 250 HP, V8 Corvette. Soooo, I just yanked out the whole thing built up this new setup and put it in. Dynomation Pro simulation shows 360 HP at the crank. It'll be interesting to dyno it or take it to the track and see what it really does.

Very nice car! I keep mine rolling while I work on it.
Most lose interest after it sits too long. You have good car stamina! |
Very nice, can only imagine how satisfying it is to finish and drive :steering:

Looks great! Congrats.

Great looking car. Hope you get many happy miles in it.

Hey cadmaniac. Had too much invested in the project to let it go. Purchased shop crane, engine stand, Kwik-Lift etc in addition the the parts for the project. Having the equipment made possible to actually get it accomplished. I did everything (except the trans blueprint of course) without help, Pulled and reinstalled the drive train and engine single handed and I'm 72 years old. For anyone thinking about tackling a project like this... it can be done, just don't skimp on the tools and equipment that enable you to do it safely it's not worth dying or getting severely injured over.

Wow, that's really impressive. I soon will be 63 and muscles and joints hurting pretty good removing and reinstalling the dash display on my 91. Maybe I should call you to do the next project I run into. :) |

A couple years ago I put my 2003 Malibu on jack stands to address rust issues in the front end. It took me a month and a half to finish and I ended up replacing the engine cradle, not an insignificant job. When I started I had a hard time getting up and down and under it. I noticed as the job progressed I felt better, more limber, and the easier it was to do the up and down, I was 65 at that point. I think the moral of my story might be "use it or lose it". |
I agree with you rusty. Being a serious do it yourselfer on cars can improve your quality of life and make you live longer. I have discovered though that my vocabulary has suffered to some extent if you know what I mean! Gets pretty intense sometime when a bolt falls down into one of those difficult to access spots.

Got that right, they sure don't design them to be worked on.

That was the 91 I sold 4 years ago when I moved to AZ. Agent Orange was not kind to me and I will never be able to do that kind of work today.

I'm sorry to hear what your service cost you. I missed Vietnam by the luck of the draw. A few years later I enlisted in the Air Force. |
Nice lookin' car Corvetteronw. Thank you for your service! That was something not many of us heard when we came home wasn't it? I caught the tail end of Viet Nam. I was in the Air Force from 1972-1978. What branch were you in? I was very fortunate and didn't have any serious effects due to my service. That war really pissed me off, at our politicians. I was a marcher in the "support our troops movement" out here in AZ when they launched the middle east effort. My position was if we're not going to support our troops, don't get involved. Oh well. that has nothing to do with cars does it. Pardon my rant.
