Starts rich

I have an 85 that when I start it especially when cold runs very rich. It will smoke for about 10. Minutes or more (white not blue) and has a very strong fuel smell. Any ideas?

Is it like burning off a can of seafoam? Check for the milkshake under the oil filler cap which indicates a blown head gasket. Could be a leaking injector or FPR. Start by pulling the vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator and see if it smells like fuel. If it smells like fuel then the diaphragm is bad and possibly leaking into intake through the vacuum line. If not move on to checking fuel pressure to see if it meets specs and holds pressure. If it bleeds down quickly possibly leaking through a leaky injector.

No where near that much smoke! Just enough to see from behind the car and smell.

Valve Stem seals should only smoke a second or two at startup so I would check for the milkshake or run a compression test and a cooling system pressure test. If that is good and the fuel pressure is holding right, maybe injectors? Or maybe it just is? If you want, you can scan for what the ECM thinks the startup temp is vs an infra red thermometer hitting the CTS.
