Some how I foolishly hoped I would be able to have mine painted by the time he built an entire car. Everyday it's blocking wiping Rage ULtra more blocking sanding. I should have it primed early next month. I hate to ask but do you have weather strip in while blocking?

Everyday my wife comes in from work and says 'what did you do today' everyday I say sanded all day. They really don't understand how you can sand for over a month.

csherman 01-16-2021 08:41 PM

Robert
This car was not bad on filler believe it or not
I have photos of it prior to primer and it wasnt bad....
Hood corners, headlight bezels, grille, taillights.... panel fitment...
The trunk lid and doors fit like a dream on this car.
Car was polyester primered - blocked - 2k primered - blocked
Reshot the trunk lid and reblocked it again - couple good waves in it

You can totally sand for a month !!!!!
I am doing the final body work on a 56 and I will 2 to 3 weeks of body work just to prepare for primer.
I have 25 hours just this week in 3 panels

I have several of the Dura Block sanding blocks but I have found I'm getting it much better using a piece of 2" dia PVC. It's about 20" long. I cut about 60-70% away leaving full round rings on each end for holding. This allows it to conform to contours but still cut very flat. I worked the hood for ever with the Dura Blocks but I couldn't ever quite get it where I wanted. I did it before I learned to use the PVC. I hit hit with the PVC yesterday and immediately I could see where my bad spots were.

I dont don't think I saw where you did or didn't have weather strip in for blocking. I ask because I'm wondering how much it might affect the final fit. I fixed the doors in rigid to do my panel sanding. I figure if I have issues with the weather stripping I'll handle it when I get there.

Weatherstrip
I do for the trunk lid - I take extra left over and tape it to the inside of the lid - then bungee the lid shut - this will simulate what trunk lid gap will look like and I do my body work and fitment from there
On the doors and hood - I dont - I tape cut down paint sticks and shim the doors out to where they are flush and adjust my hinges to make my front fit and a good gap along the bottom - then do my body work from there
Same for the hood - I install the male and female latches and adjust the hood on it bumpers - then do my body work.

Blocking tools
I tool have some PVC - in all kinds of lengths
I ordered these and fell in love with them - my new favorite blocking blocks

As with all of your work Chris the "devil is in the details" and all the nit picking spent I on the front end pays off with a wonderful final fit after paint. Keep those updates coming there Chief "numb fingers" ha.

Robert, the best tool I have found for block sanding compound surfaces (pretty much describes every surface on a Corvette) is a 12” piece of straight radiator hose with a strip of self-adhesive sand paper running down the length. Keep the length of the hose oriented to the length of the panel while sanding at 45 degree angles for best results. To your point, with guide coat you will immediately see your high and low spots that were undetectable with a long board.

Chris, congrats on achieving this major milestone!

I am not very good with body work, buxt i bought a "pool noodle" at wally world and used it on a model a ford with good results. was able to cut to any size, and shape as needed.

Chris, I always base where I do business on the cleanliness of the shop. With that said, you could eat your lunch off of that shop floor. Can't wait to see it post paint.

I used bondo on some metal strips to hold the doors in position while I did my work. On the hood I will have an actuator with a piece of weather strip across the back, no latches. So I think I'm good with those. I just got my hydraulic towers in for the deck lid and trunk, I'll be mounting those tomorrow. I felt like I would be good with those since they were mechanically fixed at the hinges and latches. I may try taping in the weather strip. Is that front cap new or original? I replaced mine and it was nowhere near that close. One of the headlight areas was so far off I cut a piece out of the old cap and laminated it in. I still had to laminate all of the way around the inside of the head light areas as they were well larger than the bezels. Thanks for answering my questions. I have the original towers powder coated black and new springs if you need them.

Chris, When you shoot your color coat, do you leave the doors and other panels on, or do you remove them? How do you get to door jams and gutters?

csherman 01-18-2021 06:58 PM

everything is shot off the car
I know it is not how it was done originally - but......you get a better job......

bgprisms 01-24-2021 10:52 AM

.......one thing to keep in mind when painting.....is do not fill the fender top valleys full of paint as the valley paint will contract and expand with the weather and finally pull loose and crack. A big issue from the factory.....

Here you go !!!! I will post more up after I get it outside !
