Yellowing carbon
 

Yep. Noticed it for the first time this morning after a wash. 5000 miles. You can see on the sides where it’s more of the original color not being subjected to the s.c. heat.

I noticed mine is starting to do it on the blower cover also….

Mine too - 4300 miles ~ to fix it, it will require a new clear coat. :/

I read long ago that GM was using a very expensive coating on the exposed CF. Reckon they are cutting back on the percentage? :shrug:

Mine is starting to turn also on the supercharger cover. But the removeable top and the wing is so far so good. I assume those will eventually start to yellow !

I don't know, I think it still looks pretty awesome! It's like a yellow weave.

Hopefully you're right but I think it depends on the method and product used for clear coating these parts. The "special" and very expensive clear coat used on C6 ZR1 carbon fiber parts was well-publicized. I don't recall hearing anything about the same stuff being used on the C7 parts, although it's certainly possible that it was.. I guess time will tell on the yellowing issue with areas not subject to engine heat.

Perhaps, that is why the carbon fiber hood on the C6 ZR1 was painted.

IIRC, even after diluted the cost per car was in the neighborhood of $1K. :willy:

The C6 stuff was more about UV protection than heat.

May be a good idea to apply some Dynamat to the underside of the cover?

I agree with Rob, the yellowing is caused from the heat of the supercharger not UV. I wonder how much higher the temp is on the top of the cover vs. the sides? My guess is quite a bit higher.

13,000 miles on my ZR1. No yellowing, not even a bit.

Mine has been wrapped with xpel since day 1, maybe that helped? I certainly dont baby it, I average 11.2 mpg.

Mine was also wrapped with xpel a couple of days after I brought it home and its starting to yellow. Wonder how dark the yellow will get !!

Open the hood and take a better look.

Could very well be a combination of UV as well as heat. If the UV were not a possible part of the equation GM would not invest such a high cost in a special coating. I suppose a comparison of a like treated (mileage, use, environment and such) vehicles. one that has been garaged and one that hasn't, might be more telling as to the greater cause.

It may well be a combination of heat and UV. My only reservation is that if UV does play a role, why have we not seen one example of the other parts yellowing ie, rear wing, front splitter etc. It may be that the clear coat on the supercharger cover is different than the other carbon parts? At the end of the day, I believe that the yellowing is caused primarily by the intense heat of the cover sitting directly on top of the supercharger. Maybe ernhart333 is on to something by suggesting placing a better heat barrier?

You are spot on!!!
If it were the clear coat the other items with the same clear (exposed to the same UV rays) would also be yellowing.
As SBR stated, it's the intensive heat up under the cover causing the yellowing and this sure makes that Weapon X vented cover look like one hell of a good idea.
I'm going to either cover mine with Dynamat or perhaps spray a coat of Lizard Skin to the bottom side.
