New calipers

Where is the best place to order new calipers for my 65 without exchange. Are any better then another or basically all the same. I remember someone telling me to get O-ring type vs regular seals ? I have no clue. Time to get it back on the road. Thanks in advance

Call Ken at Lone Star Calipers

R66 06-27-2021 08:23 PM

Yep, Lone Star can give you either one at a good price.

Just FYI, back a year ago when I called LS, their pricing was quite a bit higher than the regular vendors. As I recall it was maybe ~$25 per caliper more.

Don't even think about lip seals. Get the O-rings. Lone Star or Corvette Stainless Steel Brake Inc.

Zip has new Delco calipers with O ring seals. $189.99 ea.

CSSB was the least expensive when I last did them and the calipers were in Lonestar boxes.

What do you have now? Are they Delco Moraine castings? Have they ever been re-sleeved in stainless steel? If yes to both questions, consider rebuilding them yourself with an O-ring kit. Most vendors sell kits with new pistons, O-rings and seals for under $200 for all four wheels. Jerry

If you want to use DOT 5 silicone brake fluid in o-ring style calipers without worry, replace the o-rings that come in the calipers or kits with peroxide cured EPDM rubber o-rings of the same size. They are easily obtainable on line from the oringstore.com for about $1.67 per o-ring.

I don't think the link above is LoneStar, but they do sell on Ebay and the deals are much better than any I found at the time I replaced the two rear calipers. Look around and you can find them.

I bought some lonestar oring type brake calipers last year from Top flight, their price with discounts was better than buying direct. There is a core charge though.

I just bought a set of the O ring GM restoration calipers from CSSB in FL. They are correct and look great. Full set was under $800. My cores were trash as someone had rebuilt them and ground off the GM numbers so they could restamp with their number.
I also bought their orig style brake pads. They are GM Delco pads. Only diff for originality is the brake pad pins are gold cad instead of silver. CSSB doesn't have silver pins so I pulled the 4 pins and sent them off to be silver cad plated. Call and ask for Luke
the owner. I also bought their 509 master cylinder. It's spot on. I bought the 4 calipers, full set of brake pads, the MC, and the proportioning valve with bracket for $1299 including shipping. That included a Julian date stamp on the mc.

If you don't have good cores, then this is the way to go. Core charges are around $500 for the set. As stated don't buy the lip seal. CSSB has both but if the car sits any time at all, the lip seals are guaranteed to leak.

I'll probably get beat up for this, but my suggestion is keep it simple. Autozone has them on the shelf for $90 +30 core, and you can probably talk them down to a cheaper price when you go in. Lifetime guarantee, (keep your receipt!) no problems with defects, no delays, no shipping. BTDT for years on driver quality cars, and had leakers after 10 years replaced, no questions asked. I have them on 4 cars right now going back 20 some years.

Adding to a thread asking for the best price 3 years ago might not be effective. Lets start a new thread please.
