Payments that may go to scammers
PayPal recently announced it is taking steps to prevent people from using their “Friends & Family” payment method when those involved in the transaction are not actually friends or family. That measure is a reminder that all of us can avoid losing money to online scammers if we use PayPal or any other payment service in a way that offers protection if the deal turns out to be a scam. There is no buyer protection available through PayPal Friends & Family payments.
By way of reminder, you are most likely to be approached by a scammer in WTB threads. If you post your phone number of email address in a thread, it makes it easy for scammers to bypass the Forum and work their scams without the safeguard of the Forum’s anti-scammer team of admins/mods and fellow community members who have a keen eye for spotting and reporting scammers. Enjoy the site, knowing that most sellers/buyers on the site are honest and trustworthy in any transaction. Just don’t be bum-rushed into a questionable deal that seems too good not to act on involving a new user who has no track record of activity on the site. |
