Side view mirror
Im looking to replace the factory, drivers side view mirror on my 77’. It’s a Standard mirror , not a sport style.
Question I have, after I remove the mirror. There is a bracket with two screws holding it in place. Is there nuts, on the inside of the door that I have to worry about. Does the door panel have to be removed to hold the nuts.. |
Drivers side rear view side mirror on a 77 has the cable adjuster. Small set screw unhooks it on the door panel.
YES. you need to remove the door panel to remove the side mirror. And drop or remove the glass. |
Sounds like you have the standard mirror.
Looking at the Assembly manual UPC F01-F12 sheet 15 well nuts were installed but aftermarket vendors say NO well nuts for drivers side only passenger side. If the sport mirrors were installed yes, nuts on the inside both LH & RH |
Perhaps I spoke out of term then. I own a 77. And quite frankly I have never seen one without sport mirrors.
But perhaps there were some. Just that I had never to this day seen one. I stand corrected. |
Come to think of it. I have never even seen a photo of a 77 without sport mirrors.
Perhaps OP could post a photo? Even in every advertisement from 76 - 77 of the "New 77 Model". Never a photo with the older chrome mirror. |

Those sporty units should have been standard equipment just for appearance only. (Actual function of rearward vision, not so great). Definitely makes a statement.
The inside remote never made any sense just inches away from the outside mirror anyway. Passenger side is the one that could use a remote. At least it's not vacuum operated. |

I agree. The sport mirrors were a sharp looking upgrade when they first came out but as far as function goes, the standard mirror is much better at its job.

If you are replacing it with a 'repro' mirror, leave the bracket in place. Also, be aware that the repros tend to be floppy (and Viagra didn't help) and, at least in the case of the one on my car, the mirror fell out, chipping the paint on its way to oblivion.

Since I've always had the sport mirrors I never knew that the ugly mirrors were better at the job. Sort of like being born blind. You don't miss what you never had.
If I did happen to purchase a 77 with non sport mirrors. It would get changed over smart quick. even if you say the ugly ones some how work better. There are 2 77's in my avatar. my red one and my ex's black one. Both with sport mirrors. |
If you want sport mirrors, start searching now and “maybe” you’ll find a decent set in a couple of years.
Plan on spending big bucks for crappy sets, then purchasing all the rebuild parts. I’ve been searching for a nice set for a long time, bought several from forum members and most of the ones I’ve found are cracked, broken and some mismatched junk pieces that aren’t even off a Corvette. The drivers side haven’t been available in reproduction since the pandemic and nobody manufacturer’s the passenger side. I haven’t looked for a while, but if someone has a nice set, send me a pm. |
