Right front wheel frozen

The right front wheel is frozen after having sat for nearly 30 years.

Once the wheel is off, I see the spring that goes around the drum.

What do I need to do to get the drum off?

The spring around the drum has nothing to do with you taking the drum off. Use a large hammer or use a puller to remove the drum. I would think the star adjuster is frozen and will be of little value in removing the drum.

I would try backing off the adjuster first...it might work, it might not. But if it does, it'll save you some hassle. If you live in AZ, the adjuster will still work. If you live in MN, it won't. We can only guess where you are :)

haha.

I am in Virginia.

Car was in a garage under a cover. Surprisingly it is still in wonderful condition.

Try to tap/beat around the drum downward and outward with a deablow hammer to loosen up any rust that might have formed between the shoes and the inside of the drum and help "retract" the shoes and start pushing the drum off just a bit.

If its very stubborn it might also help to drill off the back ends of the shoe retaining pins off and/or remove the hub nut and outer bearing to help create even more play in the assembly.

Mine also sat for 30 years and had the same stuck front brake...
Lots of penatrating oil around the hub and lug bolts.
2 large screw drivers between the backing plate and the drum at 3 and 9 around the drum
Apply pressure with the screw drivers and hit the drum with a large hammer till it eventually pops...
Good luck...

Rather than beating on it with a hammer, I have used heat from a propane torch applied to the hub to loosen it up. Back off the brake adjuster first and then use heat. Be careful not to ignite any of the penetrating oil you may have used. :D

Good stuff. Sounds like a plan.

I don’t have a torch. But I do agree with that idea.

Also replace the three rubber brake hoses on the front and right rear, and I would rebuild or resleeve the wheel cylinders before taking it out for a spirited run.

If the car has been sitting that long it’s possible that the front drums are still riveted to the hub, as from the factory. If so you must remove hub and drum as assembly.

Are we to assume this car is a '64 C-2 - '63 C-2 or something older? Dennis

Prefix is C1

Bluestripe67 11-26-2023 03:57 PM

My research shows the drums are only held on when the wheel is bolted. There are no rivets etc. If the spindle nut is loosened some, it could give some wiggle room to work the drum off. Dennis

Has anyone ever seem a riveted hub? I worked in a Chevy store in the mis 60's and don't ever remember seeing or hearing of this.Where is that article from? IUf that was the case wouldn't that be judged for a survior?

Pop Chevy 11-28-2023 09:48 AM

Rivted drums (or rotors) on to the hubs was common up into the 70's. What a pain they were.

Remnents of rivets after I removed drum.
