C7 zr1 big rear spoiler removal/delete
Hello all. I am about to remove the BIG-BIG OEM rear spoiler off a 2019 ZR1 - all the OEM parts will be bubble wrapped and put into storage - HA - or - (probably more likely) mounted on the office wall as some 'WALL ART' - HA. Where the stanchions where mounted, once they are removed, there will be two rectangular holes in the horizontal surface of the third brake light lip. Has anyone seen a readymade plug that will fit into those holes?
My other thought is to scan the area of the holes in the OEM ZR1 third brake light lip and 3D print a couple of plastic plugs. The top surface of the plug would be slightly larger than the hole, and with rounded edges (the photo is a 'rough' example of the type of plug I am envisaging), and then prep and paint the two plugs and set them in place with silicone. Yes - slightly visible - as the two white painted plugs against the white OEM third brake light lip will sit slightly proud (but with the rounded edges to help blend in a bit) - HA - but still somewhat less visible that the BIG spoiler sticking up at the rear. My final thought (HA - so far) - is to purchase a new OEM ZR1 third brake light lip - then have the stanchion holes properly plastic welded - then with minimal filler - prep and paint the replacement ZR1 third brake light lip in white to match the body, and this way we also have the original OEM ZR1 third brake light lip with the stanchion holes carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and in storage if the next owner in '50-years' time wants to revert back to the BIG spoiler - HA. Has anyone undertaken a ZR1 rear spoiler delete - and still left the ZR1 OEM third brake light lip? Thanks. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...1c241d59c.jpeg IDEA EXAMPLE ONLY |
Can’t say I have ever heard of anyone wanting to de-wing a ZR1. So you’d probably be the first to have a need for such plugs.
Are you going to remove the front splitter as well? If not…then in before the aero police chime in and say that you’re going to make your car dangerously unstable by altering the downforce balance. |
If it were me and if I couldn't live with the BAW, I would just locate a low wing off a non-ZTK car and go that route. The back end will be a lot less pronounced and the entire process will be a heck of a lot easier.. Just my opinion. Good luck with it.

That wing is part of the ZR1 ZTK mystique but to each his own.
As you noted, you could use rectangular plugs painted body color but if you really don’t want the high wing your best bet is to replace the little spoiler with the third brake light. You will need to make the plugs excessively tall and they will look ugly. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...1029bc5c2.jpeg Notice how the wing brackets sit proud of the smaller lip. Your plugs will look bad as they will stick up a bit. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...82c2f95ce.jpeg You should replace the small spoiler with the built in brake light to do it correctly. |
I don't have a solution for you but I thought I would share this picture. My wing was removed for PPF and this is one of the pictures I took, enlarged to show the mounting location. I didn't look at them too closely but I remember that there were plates that were close to flush with the surface. I thought I remembered them having 4 threaded holes. They are covered with PPF in this picture. The wing is back on now so I can't examine it any closer. Hope this helps.

650-hp BBC in a '69 ZL1 and a 160-hp H-D?!
Ok. I admit. You're way more bitchin' than me. If you change your mind, I'd still buy that wing. |
I think this thread is a "simon says" thing Hib............for a sentence to count, it has to end with a HA!?!?!

Make sure you gold chain does not get caught in the spinners or your rear wing - HA,
Now off to bead, tomorrow morning is a scheduled colonoscopy...........which is a far more appealing prospect than reading another one of your replies HA |
Seems like you have all the answers, why do you bother asking the gold chain crowd for an opinion, Huh?

Hmm I’ve always wondered what Asperger’s Syndrome looked like if was in written form. I think I may have finally spotted it.
OP, this one has gone off the rails it seems. Can’t believe you’ve been on this forum for 15 years with barely a couple dozen posts only recently. Might be time to go back to lurking only. |

Why not sell it and buy a Z06, I will trade you.....

Anyone know the part number for the third brake light cap? Will have a "big wang" but it will come out the back of the bumper. Could easily fill in the squares.
