How does the blower motor come out?
 

Who's removed the blower (vent/air conditioning) motor?
Did you get it out from the bottom of the car, or did you have
to remove some stuff to get it out from the side?

Mine is either stuck and won't spin, or finally died (of course, after I fixup
the broken relay... )

This is a pain so first make sure that it's really dead. Disconnect it from your wiring harness and power it up from an independent source.

If it runs, you have a wiring problem - probably a ground problem.

If not, first you will have to disconnect your AC dryer to get access to the blower. This means evaporating the refrigerant. Then you just unscrew the screws holding the blower in and replace it with a quality unit since you don't want to do this again. Power it from the independent source to test clearance and then reconect your AC.

Often the inlet side of the evap box is full of leaves and crap which blocks the air flow. Connect a 1" flex hose to your shop vac and snake it down the cowl inlet and suck that stuff out. This can also be done thru the fan hole when you have the fan out.

Very well done article. I have been wanting to make the change to a more powerful fan, but, was not exactly sure how to tackle the problem. With you detailed instructions I am ready to tear into it now. Thanks for posting this.

I recently replaced the blower fan on my 1978 Vette and this is how I went about it.....

I removed the radiator expansion tank.

I unscrewed the motor housing from the inlet box with a socket driver.

Disconnected electrical plugs and sundry hoses from the housing.

Carefully removed the fan/motor assembly from the vehicle.

It took a little TLC, but I managed to do this from the top side of the vehicle.

I don't know what year your car is, so it may be different.

Thanks guys - I'm pretty sure something is wrong with this motor - its getting power,
it just doesn't do anything. I'll stick my hand down the air access port and try
moving the cage...

Thanks for the writeup and instructions - sounds like just about everything else on this
car - it's a PITA to get it or something else in the way out :banghead: :smash:

Checked the price at Autozone for a blower motor $14.00
Anyone use these? Much worse than the GM ones?

The C4 model is $38 at autozone, a GM one 52466047 is about $45.

Big difference in price...

Is your link correct? I just tried to access and no luck.
