How do you mark and cut the rocker panels for Hooker sidepipes

I have hookerside pipes and have mounted them to the vette. I now see I cannot get the rocker panel in to mark it for clearance. What is the easiest way to do this? Did you cut any of the fiberglass out of the way between the 1st 2 screw holes for clearance?
So throw it on me how to do this project. I will paint the rockers after they are modified.
Thanks for the input..

I used a small grinder to cut the fiberglass. Next I used some welder's chaulk to draw a line and cut the rocker panals. It's a little trial and error but it's better to cut too little than too much. I can post post some pics tomorrow for you.

I took measurments. From the top of the header pipe to the top edge where the rocker sits, and the total width of the pipes plus 1/2" for ease of install. I also used the rocker mounting holes as refrence points. As Cory stated above...cut a little at a time. I used metal sheers for the straight cut, and a dremmal with a grinder bit to "round" out the corners. Take your time, measure, re-measure, and measure again. Draw the cut...dry fit, look, and study. These rockers are too expensive to make mistakes with!!
Good Luck

Neil,

Just get a piece of cardboard (I actually used a piece of scrap paneling) and make a template of your rocker panels, including the bolt holes. Use the template for your test cuts until the fit around the header pipe is correct. Transfer the template back to the rocker panels and cut away with confidence.

Yes, I had to cut back some of the fiberglass near the tire well for clearance, also cut about 2-3" of rocker panel. I just kind of eyeballed it, cut it short first, then check it to see if more needs to be cut. You can see alittle bit of the cut rocker panel in this pic. Click pic to enlarge it. HTH. Good luck.

Had to cut back some of teh glass to be able to slide the rocker in but didn't need to cut the rocker itself

I think you might be able to see in this pic how much I had to cut the passenger side rocker, hardly any on the drivers side. Seems as with a lot of stuff on our cars that each one is a little different.
Hooker actually supplied templates with the headers when I bought them.... http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...d/fc21f9f4.jpg

:bb ah shucks :lolg:

If you want chrome (and I have a feeling you might) give Summit a call, they were cheapest back when I bought mine. If it's ceramic coated you desire go directly to Jet-Hot do not pass go do not ...........

Mike, Are yours chrome or Jet-Hot coated? Right now I'm leaning towards chrome. Rod

Re: How do you mark and cut the rocker panels for Hooker sidepipes (Red73)

They were originally chrome and after a few years they started to look a little punky. I had them Jet-Hot coated a couple years ago and they still look just about as good as when I got them back....

Re: How do you mark and cut the rocker panels for Hooker sidepipes (yellow 72)

I also bought mine from Jet Hot coating and they stand behind there product 100%.
I got one of the rockers modified this evening. Had to cut 3 half moons in it, the driverside. The passenger side is a little tighter it appears but I should be able to trim it in the same place. I will double check it tommorrow and post some pics.
I used a small hand router to cut the aluminum and a flapper wheel 60 grit to smooth the edges along with a file.

What's the difference between Hooker's ceramic coated headers and Jet-Hot coated headers? Quality?

That's it, I've heard horror stories of manufacture ready coated headers.
Don't know any specificly of Hooker, but from Jet-Hot you know what you're getting.

 me too, i even thought of splashing some gold flake paint around when i was detailing the engine compartment but couldn't bring myself to do it. It was seeing his car and Snodrgn that made me drop the coin for the Hookers.
