distributor gear

hi,
i took my distributor apart some time ago, just got round to rebuilding it this morning and can't find the gear for the end,
i have a V6 distributor lying around,,so,,i took the gear off that, it seems to fit fine,
the question is,,,,will it be ok when it's in the engine??????
are the teeth the same as the V8 ones????
thanks,
neil

Re: distributor gear (camaroneil)

IF the distributor you have came from a Chevrolet 90 deg.V-6 (4.3 or 229cid) it should be the same since those engines were essentially a Chevy 350 or 305 with two cylinders missig. I don't know about the 60 degree v-6's.

:iagree: But you also have to make sure it is made of the correct material to run with what ever the cam gear needs. ie if the V6 had a roller billet cam then you don't want to run it with an iron gear cam and visa-versa. If you have a parts store around you could get the right gear for $20-$30.

The original gear has 13 teeth, I believe. In any case it is an odd number and there is a dimple on the bottom of the gear. It has to be lined up with the firing tip of the rotor when you put it back on the shaft.
