Help me diagnose problem with my 413

Hey Guys,
Finally got my car back on the road. After finishing the engine i garaged it for a good 8 months while i saved up the 3 k needed for trans rebuild and converter.
I currently have a small dirty old air filter element on the 830 ann dis holley. No suprise the engine wont rev much past 5000 rpm. I took off the filter and ran the car with nothing, at around 4500 rpm onwards the engine starts to crack and fart thru the exhaust. Sounds to me like too much fuel. There is no off idle stumble. What should i adjust?

tape a fuel pressure gauge to the windshield, check in gear at 5000

Too much fuel will not cause an engine to "crack and fart." They will generally be lazy and just lay down if they are too rich (unless it is so rich it is fouling the plugs). Too lean of a condition will create a misfire but it will usually pop back through the carb.

Hearing a mis-fire through the exhaust is generally a mis-adjusted valve, bad valve springs, or ignition problem.

If I don't have the transition slots right on my 850, it will miss when I floor it.
