What is the BEST jacking procedure.
 

I want to go front to back on my tires. I have a regular 3 ton floor jack. Is it best to jack up the rear or front, install jackstand and jack up the opposite end and install stands. This would mean the entire one side of the car would be on stands. Is this proper or is there a better way.

With a floor jack, you should be able to get either side of the car in the air by jacking from the front jack point. Then I put a stand on the frame in the front where it starts to curve towards the middle of the car. This allows me to change both tires on that side of the car. Also, I don't worry about opening doors, or the hood, etc.. just jack and go. :thumbs:

Steve: Just got the "Jack Tip" from Corvette Gadget Man and installed on my jack,,, fits between the rear exhausts and lifts the whole rear up even and nice... nice add...

If you have the glass roof panel in you should probably remove it. It will crack with some body flex. I know because I had mine do it! :withstupid:

If you want the absolute best way, find someone with a lift and get all four wheels off the ground.

But you can jack up one side, switch front to back and continue on the other side. I've never had a problem this way(although I don't do it that way often).

Thanks for all the input. I will probably just take it to discount tire and have them balanced and rotated. I really need to find a good alignment shop. I dont think i am out of alignment but it wouldnt hurt to tweak it.

I have two floor jacks each with a hockey puck sitting in the jack 'bowl" making any lifting a piece of cake. It's a :cool: way to do it.

Hockey puck! Great! I was wondering what I could do with the pucks I have down here in the Carolinas. Thanks for the tip. Now if I can only figure out what to do with these hockey skates. :skep:

This is good for all four tires; the jacking tool, to lift with the diff., is a good buy. :thumbs:

The Corvette Gadget Man's jack insert for lifting by the differential is a "must have" and should be in everyone's garage & race trailer. Even easier if you "lost" the spare & carrier. :cheers:

For the front, if you drive up on a piece of 2x12 it will give you enough elevation to slide your 3-ton floor jack under so you can lift the whole front by the cross member.

In a hurry at the track? Lift one whole side at a time by jacking from directly under the mirror & change the tires fast. I keep a Milwaukee 18V impact wrench in my race tool box. :D

Yes, under the front crossmember. First use the tool mentioned earlier to jack the rear in one lift. Place the jackstands in the small recess area in front of the rear tires. Then replace the standard jack lift plate and you can easily get to the front crossmember once the rear is up by sliding the jack in from behind the front tire. As you jack the front of the car make sure to keep the jack clear of where you will be placing the front jackstands (under the frame behind the front tire).

The part I've goofed up before is lowering the rear first. If you do this you won't be able to get the jack out from under the car when you let the front down! :jester Remember to lower the front first, and you'll have no problems. :D

Thanks VettRacer.....you know, figuring out how to jack up the car has taken me longer than any other car I've had, the fiberglass body really has me jumpy as to jack placement....My 1st repair job was a clutch & gettting the car in tha air sure took TOO LONG....

Always glad to help. Having a tool to jack under the diff is the key... Hey, I see you are from Minden, NV. I've seen signs for Minden on my long drives from Phoenix to visit my parents in Lake Tahoe but can't remember where - Isn't Minden somewhere between Hawthorne and Carson City?

Hi Steve, I use the Kwik-Lift with the bridge attachment. It allows me to go under and set a modified bottle jack on the areas where the frames come together, looks like a seam. But for your case, I jack up the front using the cross member (protected by a 2 foot 2x4 or 4x4) then jack stands just aft of the front wheels and then just jack up the rear using the previously mentioned jack adapter. You know, I've never even looked for the jack that came with the Vette, I hope I have one somewhere. :bb
