Rattley sound - seems to be coming from the exhaust

No codes, no noise beyond the normal injector noise from the engine. I've heard this a couple of times and it seems to be more pronounced if I do a quick and light rev of the engine.

Anybody now this sound and do I need to worry about it? Seems to be due to back-pressure to me, but wanted some opinions.

thx.

in 01 there was a rattle in the Ti exhaust, but for 02 they were to have fixed the noise maker and it was to be no more?!?!?!?

I dont think there is a TSB or anything tho......may take it to the dealer and have them reproduce the sound and get a new cat back??!?!?!

hope that helps

It is a late model '02 (march)...

It is a harmless noise. Many '02's have it, with no ill effects. I've come to find it endearing. It softens with time. The only cure is to replace the X pipe section with aftermarket. Otherwise, allow it to become part of the character of the car.

fast.....if it was built in 3-02, it was actually a late model year 02 car....they start building 02 model year in late June -01

I would say she has the updated exhaust, but still take it to Classic Chevy in Grapevine, ask for Bob Wrinkle, tell him Tony Barker sent ya, tell him your woes and he will do his BEST to get ya done right !!!!!!!!!!!

thanks

I've got a 01 which has the noise even after a new x pipe and B+B Prt exhaust. Thought at first it was the throw out bearing. No ill effects. It sounds like quiet, loose rattle. I can hear it when I'm passing by parked cars with the windows down. I'm kind of use to it now.

Hey Brent, assuming you have no other mods to your car, if you install an aftermarket x-pipe (corsa, magnaflow etc.) I'm almost certain the rattling noise will go away.
I have an '02, also made in March, and after switching to the magnaflow x-pipe the "jingle" noise is gone. I know some people say they get used to it but why should we have to.
By the way, GM knows about the problem and have taken their sweet time in fixing it. A friend has an '03Z and it still has it . The C5 registry posted this in their June '02 hot news so maybe the early '03's don't have the fix yet. Don't know about the late '03's or '04's.

Check the springs near the cross-over. If they don't have enough tension, you can get a rattle sound (bend the tabs to increase tension). Have someone check out the exhaust while you rev the engine: they should be able to locate the source of the noise (loose spring(s), rubbing components, etc.). Rehang the exhaust to fix if necessary.

HI ON MY 02 COUPE I HAD A RATTLE IN THE EXHAUST. IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE HEAT SHEILD UNDER THE MUFFLER. JUST LOOSEN THE EXHAUST AND YOU CAN GET TO THE SHEILD. FIXED MY RATTLE.

This has been hashed over countless times. What you have is the Z06 exhaust "jingle". It is caused by the design of the stock H-pipe. I fixed mine by removing the stock h-pipe and replacing it with a magnaflow x-pipe.

Separate problems: exhaust rattle/vibration and exhaust jingle. Different sounds, different fixes.

My "jingle" sounded like rattling chains under the car. I though that's what was being described here. Maybe not?

They could be talking about the jingle or one of the other noises (pipes, mufflers, heat shield, spring-related, etc.).

Fastlane,
I have the same exact issue with my 03. Have you resolved the rattle yet?

Re: Rattley sound - seems to be coming from the exhaust (RacerXq)

Like many others I had the marbles in the can rattle/jingle on deceleration. I put up with it for 10 months and finally had enough. Got my x-pipe installed a couple of weeks ago, now I'm a happy camper.

You can get an x-pipe replacement from many of our vendors for between 100-120, the install will cost you between 50-100 at your local muffler shop. The Magnaflow and Corsa replacement x-pipes are 100-150 more.

So for between 150-350 you will have only the pure sound of your V8 exhaust system. :D

Good luck,
John

Advance Service Info - Jingle Type Noise Coming from Exhaust System (Fix Not Yet Available) #03-06-05-005 - (04/14/2003)
"Jingle" Type Noise Coming from Exhaust System (Fix Not Yet Available)
2002-2003 Chevrolet Corvette

Condition
Some customers may comment that a "jingle" type noise can be heard coming from the exhaust system. The noise is similar to the sound made by shaking a key ring. This noise occurs most often on a deceleration.

A technician may be able to determine that the noise is coming from the "H" pipe area of the exhaust system.

Correction

Important
DO NOT replace any exhaust system components. Replacing components will not correct this condition. The noise is not an indication of anything being loose or broken.

Engineering is currently developing a permanent fix. Once the fix is available, this bulletin will be revised.

Dealer Action
