Rear wheel bearing/hub assy-1998

Has anyone replaced the rear hub/bearing assembly and where did you purchase them? The dealer wants $486 wholesale price for them. Autozone lists them for $129 but they don't stock them. I can't believe that they are the correct assy if they are selling that cheap. Any input appreciated,
thanks; Scott

Scott: Rockauto has the rear hub assembly listed for $164.79. They also carry the GM hub assembly (with integral sensor) for $517.41.

Yes these are the same assembly most likely made by different manufactures and one has the sensor in it and the other does not.

It's a tough decission isn't it?? :crazy:

Check Advance Auto & NAPA. They both used to carry the Timken hub assembly for under $ 200.

It is GM # 7470571 and are sold by gmpartsdirect.com at $348. You will need a 34mm socket to remove the assembly.

Just call your local bearing dealer and give them the Timken part #. (available in the installation guide in the archives). I got mine from Kaman Bearings for about $150 per corner.

Scott what type of noice is your car amking? My 98 Vette when I turn hard left I hear what sounds like a my tire rubbing the wheel well like sound. I checked and found no sign's of any tire rub anywhere. Is this the type of nioce assiciated with a wheel bearing going bad? Is it when I turn and load the bearing up with the cars weight the reason I only hear the noice? I'm trying to trouble shoot before I drop the scratch for the bearing assembly. I found a post from a guy on the forum who did the changeout and provided a step by step with pic's for guys like me who will aleast give a stab at doing it myself befor I let the dealership bend me over.

If you want the web sight let know and I'll send it to you. Save the wave

You can get the same exact TIMKEN bearings (hub assemblies) from AutoZone. The fronts are part number 513139 and are about $160 each. The rears are part number 512153 and cost about $130 each. These parts are exact replacements for the OEM parts. I could not see any difference between these and the originals.

Mike;
The car sounds like theres a beehive in the right rear and it gets progressively louder from 30mph as you speed up. Loading and unloading the bearing on turns affects the tone.

Re: Rear wheel bearing/hub assy-1998 (jrda)

jrda;
thanks for the detailed r&r and part numbers! My buddy is going to be really happy as I had informed him that the dealer cost for the bearing was $486 and I couldn't believe the Autozone quoted price could be the right item! That is less than I paid for the rear bearings on my C4's and they have no sensor mounted in them! Now if only I can get the dealer to warranty the clutch release bearing I installed last March.
Thanks again to all; Scott

Someone said there is no sensor in them?

The bearing I got from Advance Auto had the sensor attached and was made by BCA. Retail was $ 168.00.
