Just how loud is an NHRA Top Fuel dragster?

I was interested to find out, so I have been doing my homework on it for the last 10 minutes..... here are some things to compare it with:

70 db = Dodge Viper at full throttle
90 db = Raceway Park weekly limit to my knowledge
100 db = NHRA Sportsman db limit
120 db = average rock concert
130 db = NASCAR "Nextel" Cup Car at full throttle acceleration
140 db = Motorhead concert (the loudest band in the world)
160 db = the loudest concert ever recorded (in open air)

so, how loud are those NHRA nitromethane cars? The highest reading I've seen is about 180 db and it's 2 years old... that's as loud as a space shuttle at take off on ground zero.

Now THAT'S power :yesnod:

I'm sure that my '68 is somewhere in the mid 100 db range at full acceleration..

From how many feet away are each of these figures? It makes a big difference. The db limit at the track is measured from 100' away.

each of them are showing up as from being in the crowd, or about 90-100 feet away

(though the viper statistic is from in the car I believe)

If you want to stand on the side of the road and listen, I'll volunteer to drive yours by at full acceleration.

I find it hard to believe that motorhead and top fuel are only 20 db apart.

That vibrating feeling in your stomach is not coming from a bumpy road :yesnod:

The last time I went to the US nats, I was standing against the fence approx. 40' from the retaining wall, and my eyeballs rattled up and down in my skull when the two cars went by!!!

I went to E town to the mopar nationals(Primary reason was to meet John Lingenfelter which I did) in 1999. You could hear the fuelers idling all the way from Englishtown road. I went by a few t/f's when they we're idling in the pits....my eyes never burned soo much from nitromethane.

The ground literally shakes when they take off. It's something you have to experience.

A friend went to the Keystones this year @ Maple Grove, only to get 'well-lubricated' the night before.
He was still sleeping in his car, during the First Round, waaaay out in the parking-lot.
As the crew fired Doug Kalitta's fueler, it 'hydrauliced' a cylinder; the explosion literally 'blowing' the head off the block (I'm told).
My buddy 'jumped' from his sleep, smacking his head off the steering wheel of his car.
Imagine the concussion felt by the poor crew-members.....

Don't forget it's not a linear scale..... every 3 db is doubling the level. 103 db is twice the level as 100.... 106 is double 103 etc.... either way though its freakin LOUD !!!!!!

Motorhead is 140 - Top Fuel is 180 (40 apart)
Rolling Stones claim to have the equipment for 176 db from 100 feet away, but I doubt it. Loudest live band was 160 in open air.. and that would be Manowar.

You need to go to the NHRA event over there at Raceway Park. I can not describe the "MUSIC" a FUEL car makes. I go to the Gatornationals every year and get hospitality passes to the Oakley/Schumacher camp and I'm right there when they're tuning them before the body goes back on. There are no words for it. When they "wack" the throttle and you see the other people (not expecting it) jump about 10 feet  If you heard one of these running you'd be pretty ashamed/imbarassed or whatever to see what you compared them to.

Nascar noise is "chump change" compared to NHRA

I just HAD to laugh when I read this; it reminded me of the '91 keystone Nationals...
I took a buddy to se the Fuel-cars for his first time, and he took his old cam-corder.
The next week, he invited me over to watch his 'videos' of race-day. In front of his full family, we watched the tapes of the 1st pair on Sunday morning thunder down the strip.....
Once the crowd 'quieted-down', you could easily hear my buddy, who ran an 11-flat '82 Monte Carlo, say to nobody in particular.....
"Now I know just how F*&%ing pitifully-slow we REALLY are!!!!!"
