from TPI to a carb on an 85, my experience

As some of you know i have switched my 85 from TPI to a crbed motor.
here's the combo.
355
9.3-1
Dart iron eagles ( 180cc )
224-235 @ 50 495-518( with 1.6 rocker) 112LSA
weiand stealth intake ( hood clearance)
holley 750 vac secondary.
1-3/4 long tubes
2.5" dual ex. with an H pipe and ravins.

First of all i used a 3" filter with a drop base, then went to the hardware and got a flat piece of alum. cut it out and used that for an air cleaner lid. HOOD CLEARANCE IS STILL 1/4"

the car pulls 15" of vaccume at idle 800 RPM and idles great in gear 700 RPM.
when i start the car no gas is required, just turn the key and it's running.

Now i also elimated the computer and dash. I went with a CYBERDYNE ( sold in jegs) speedo/ tach combo. This is great, it gives a adj shift light, 0-60 times, highest RPM and highest MPH. All for $133.

I also installed the B&M govenor kit. this area still needs work. My part throttle shifts are 1600 and the only WOT run so far is 6500 1st and 5400 second. Any advice here on set up would be greatly appreciated. I plan to install a turbo 350 and i desperatly need some some gears, 3.07 just doesn't cut it with this combo.

I'll share more as i go for those of you interested.

My main happiness, is simple engine bay that's easy to work on and it only takes 2 wires to run the car ( starter, dist) the power from 2500-6000 is nice too.

I'm assuming that you still have the TH700-r4 in your car, if that's the case you aren't going to gain a darned thing by switching to a TH350, it isn't any stronger than the TH700-4r. About the only thing you'll change is the gearing of your low gear. Here's a link to a page with information on the TH700-r4 and some tweaks on the governor. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700R4.htm
Here's another link that explains how the governor works, lighter springs effect the 1-2 shift, the 2-3 shift is controlled by the weights. It usually takes several tries to get your shift points right. I know it did with mine. This link really explains how things work on a TH400 and TH350, but it should be similar for the TH700-r4. http://yarchive.net/car/transmission.html

thank you. My main interste in the switch is in the case the 700 breaks. The turbo 350 trans and converters are much less costly

Or you can get a Th400 w/gear vendors overdive unit, costly yes, but its practically unbreakable unless your pushing 1200HP and have a solid axel with slicks I guess.

Right now I have a th400 and had to fab up a bracket to hold to the Cbeam which was modified. But I want to go with a 6 speed T56 transmission just b/c I want a 3.73+ rear gear and I dont want to cruise the freeway at 2600rpm.

 Good to hear the new carb worked out mike. Really would have been nice to see 1/4 mile times or dyno results to compare performance. :yesnod:

How do you control your converter?
I have problem with mine, "locked" at all times.

i have previous 1/4 mile times from TPI ..13.7 on motor 11.91 with 150 wet kit.

I'll be running this combo as soon as the track opens.

The converter shouldn't be locked untill' 4th gear. I have a internal switch that does this ( from 700-r4.com) i also have a switch wired in to lock it up earlier if i choose to. I forget which wire on the trans plug needs 12V to it, but i would start looking there.
