Stronger Differential for my '81
 

I have an '81 that I've pulled the original numbers matching 350 and Super T10 for storage until I get rid of the "more power, Scotty" bug. I have a 406 that should make around 500hp and that much torque along with an over the counter cast iron Super T10. I understand that the differential in my '81 is now my weakest link. How can I beef this up with REASONABLE costs in mind? I can get the complete rear end out of a '79. Can it be installed in my '81 without too much chopping or trouble?

Unless the twisties are in your dreams. One of the local B.A. Vettes has a 4 link & 9 inch ford solid axle. He drives down to the cruise nights during the summer and I have seen it do some 9.60's with a 472 BBC and drives around on occasion. I imagine MONTY'S old TT back half car must have shown up in Hawaii by now.

I just keep thinking how those Milodon 20 cc dished pistons in a 427 ci Motown small block in it's completey done configuration right now with it's balanced short block really only needs a big blower. Because with 76cc heads its only like 8.3 C/R Then you have 800 -1000 hp out of a small block. :cheers:

I'm hearing rumors of Monty's car coming to the island however no show for those not in the know.
Somebody has the real scoop, but they're not talking. :rolleyes:
I'm on the fence right now about roll cage and racing the car......I'm at a point where the rough decision has to be made....do I turn this into a race car or keep it the way it is and be satisfied with the power it can produce on demand. I went to the Alaska/Hawaii shootouts the other night and the race bug was wigging me out.....I wanted to be in there racing not spectating....
I ended up crewing for a friend's dragster since some of his crew failed to show.....He had a bad night and ended up on the trailer after the first pass.....Racing can be a great experience or a complete let down......especially when a small part fails and puts you on the trailer early. :steering:

Cast iron rears will bolt up to aluminum covers w/no problems. I have some pics that I can post here later.

This is the cast rear on the aluminum wing. You will need to change your 1/2 shafts, strut rods and your spring. You wlil also need to buy 63-79 spindle flanges. This pic has the HD 30 spline kit in it. Unless your in the 750-800 HP range you will not need it. But to get the stronger rear you will need all of the parts I listed above to make it work.

What of the aluminum wing? Doesn't it become the 'weakest link' if the cast iron diff is substituted for the aluminum diff?

I have heard the aluminum diff housing can support 400hp if properly blueprinted.

Not sure what your asking me? :confused: Are you asking if the wing becomes the weakest link??? Yes a aluminum diff can hold about 400 HP if correctly set up, but I personally wouldn't go drag racing all the time w/it.

Is is possible or feasable to adapt the entire early rear end, wing, half shafts and all to the '81 or must it be a piecemeal project?

You have to do it the way I explained before b/c your strut rods have a different bend to them(at the ends), your 81 1/2 shafts are shorter, your splindle flanges are totally different.
