Secrets to disassembly of a double pulley alternator?
 
Anyone have any way of getting to the nut on a double pulley alternator? I can't get a wrench in there, it's to deep.

How do you keep it from spinning though if you just use a socket?

Hold the pulley fan with gloves on and USE AN IMPACT GUN

:iagree: 1/2" impact and it will come right off.

I have also used an oil filter wrench with a rag to hold the pully when not using an impact. :yesnod:

.. or a strap wrench to hold the pulley while using ratchet.

With an impact wrench, you won't need to hold it much. It should spin right off.

Impact guns put the force on the center instead of out at the end of the breaker bar or ratchet.Things that seem impossible come apart easy with an impact gun.. Ingorsal Rand is one of the more powerfull ones. Even the fea market specials are better than bt hand when dealing with things that spin. Wait until you try to remove the fly wheel from an old VW beatle. ONE 25MM nut. The engine tries to turn ove even with the entire neighborhood trying to hold it. NOT fun.

Like the guys said: Just put a rag around the outside of the sharp cooling fan or wear a glove, hold on, and give the nut a few quick blasts with the 1/2" drive impact gun. It will come off easily.
