Paint removal on urethane bumpers ?
The urethane bumpers on my 76 are faded and have some spider webbing on them. The original laquer paint on the rest of the car is in great shape. My question is how to remove the paint from the bumpers? I have read on some other threads not to use a chemical stripper as it could damage the bumpers so I guess my only recourse is to sand the old paint off, reprime and paint. I have a quart of the original color laquer paint and the flex agent but I am at a loss on how to remove the old. Any advice would be appreciated.

We used an aerosol can of some type that the automotive paint supplier (PPG) gave us designed to strip paint off plastic parts. It's slow, but it doesn't attack the bumper.

Re: Paint removal on urethane bumpers ? (Vette Helper)
Have used a paint stripper called Bull Dog designed for urethane bumpers.
It is available at Auto Zone and at many auto paint supply stores. It takes 3 to 5 cans to do a bumper depending on how many layers of paint are on it. After stripping the bumper I washed it with soap and water. Have used it on several bumpers and after repainting them have never had any problems with the paint lifting. Use the stripper with plastic applicators normally used for spreading body filler to avoid gouging the bumper. |
