So screwed...can you identify these pistons?

I am not even going into how I talked to a local mechanic today and he said...its all bad... :cry :banghead:

Can someone just please tell me what pistons these are... all they say is "030" on them.

I don't think the 383 will ever be complete...

It works!

Now please help!

some history? where did these pistons come from? did a prior owner or tech install them?

USAsOnlyWay 07-01-2004 08:58 PM

Re: (bogus)

From a guy in chicago.
Prior prior owner I believe...
History... I think the last person thought they were SRP flat tops...well they aren't

They are supposedly forged...

I don't have access to take them out right now, so I am looking to find out what they are ahead of time...

Re: (USAsOnlyWay)

Those are DEFINATELY not SRP/JE pistons, of any kind. I seriously think they're stockers...

Stock!?!? :mad

But why would stock say 030 on them?

chriswtx 07-01-2004 09:20 PM

Re: (TIMSPEED)

:iagree: Not JE or SRP, but they could be forged. Really no way to tell who manufactured them unless you take off the oilpan and look on the bottom of the piston. Most manufactures put their stamp on the bottom of them and since the engine is not in the car it should be pretty easy to remove the pan.

Can ya take one out of the block?
If the oil pan is off, look from the underside up into the bottom of the piston.
If you can see a very thin casting line they are forged.
Can you move the rod independent of the wrist pin? If so, they are full floaters. If the rod and the pin move as one, we know the pin is pressed in and you might even see some dark discoloration on the ends of the rod from someone using heat to help press the pins in.

Looks like a smogger to me, for a bored out stock motor. :chevy
Sort of has that cast look also. (by the appearance of the valve relief)

Re: (Spankyellow)

Thats how mine were when I got the short block from Jasper. Dished instead of flat tops. Pisses me off to this day, and to this day I think I'm loosing horsepower because of it. It turns out I only lost 1/2 a point, but either my clutch is going, or I lost horspower, cause I can't even spin the tires in first.

:mad

Re: (1990dtgL98)

Ughh...

what exactly do you mean by smoggers?

I think I am going to pull the pan this weekend.
Happy 4th to me :banghead:

Thanks guys, I will keep you all updated. If this turns out how it is, I might have 1.6 magnums, brand new(coating) LPE headers, a freshly painted hi-flow TPI intake, 113d port heads (5 angle jobbed), and this block...

Yeah, thats how close I was...all it needed pushrods and gaskets and then it was in the car...wish me luck that I didn't get screwed...

And if I don't report back before then
Happy 4th to you all and to our troops!

:iagree: Ouch, looks like stock pistons. :( :cuss

Re: (korvette4u)

Nope. I have those in my car....and these have a much shinier finish. That and those pistons on Summit Racing have the NP423 .040 in the center of the dish, these don't.

They almost look cast, but I could be wrong.

I hope I am.

If you have a 383, then they are .030" oversize for your 350 to make a 383.

My Hyperutectics had reliefs on both sides like this so you did not have to orient the pistons at assembly.

BTW, you have mail!

reliefs on both sides does not mean u can install them any old way...there is a dot on these pistons and THAT means they will face to the front of the engine....the four valve relief is meant for applications using double cams systems....same piston for many different application!!! i am using the same piston which i just installed ( flat tops hyperu's) with 10:1 compression and they do make one HELL of a differnce with stock ported heads...the ones in the picture are a bit lower in compression and are meant for .030 over bore...most engine rebuilders choose the hyper's becuz they are CHEAP 12.88$ US and are reliable over stock....i know this becuz as i said before, i replaced them this past week...total job took me 32 hours from start to finish :hurray:

But they are not specific to one side or the other correct?

Re: (ld85)

yes ... if the dot faces forward to front of engine ther is only one way to install..you must not install dot facing rear...

prper installation is with dot forward connecting rods must face oppsite : EX: # 1 and #2 , #3 and #4 and so on...the connecting rods have side bearing surface and will face each other in it respective place.. when the rods are installed into new pistons ALL dots will face forward!!! there is no other way!!!!
