C4 Ignition Module Problems
I own a 1988 35th Anniversary Car. I've owned it about 10 years. About every 18 months to 2 years, I try to start my car and she is totally dead. I check the fuel, the fuel injection pressure, and find that everything is fine. I then take out the ignition module and replace it with a new module from one of the autoparts stores. As soon as I reassemble, and try to start, she fires up just fine. When I take the old one to the autoparts store to check what is wrong, the ignition module checks out as just fine. I know it is the ignition module because this has happend 5 or 6 times. As soon as I replace the module, she starts just fine for another 18-24 months. The cure is a new ignition module.
My questions are: can anyone tell me why I blow an ignition module every 18 months to 2 years? My only observation is that the silicone grease seems to have dried up and has crystalized. I wonder if the module gets too hot and then blows. I would like to figure out how I can prevent this problem since it occurs at the most inopportune times. My second question is why the ignition module tests totally good, yet is clearly not. Has anyone else had this problem with a C$ and can anyone give me some idea of what produces this problem. I hope someone else has had this problem and knows a solution Gary 88 35th Anniversary, and '82 Collector Car |
