HEI spring kit
who has/sells a good Hei re-curve kit
for a stock 76 HEI dist ? want full mech advance at 3000 rpm im on my 3rd kit trying all the light springs..... it doesnt look like you should use only one spring either thanks R. |
Mr. Gasket has a decent kit. I'm going through this myself and cannot get more than 20-23 degrees of mech advance by 3000 or 5000 rpm. I have my initial set at 12 degrees which means the centrifigul advance is only good for 8-11 degrees when it should be more like 20 degrees. I did some web research and found out that there is a rumor with GM HEI on emission controlled cars. That GM limited the amount of total mechanical advance for emissions purposes. I haven't been able to verify this a couple of times, but it may make sense.
My next step is to remove the distributor and check for binding and regrease everything. BTW: I had already verified TDC on the balancer with the timing marks and I'm dead on. So we can rule out slipping of the balancer. When I figure this one out I'll post my results, but it won't be for a while. The weather has been too good to lay the car up for a day. Hope this helps. |
are you also changing the wt.s

Lars sells a kit.

really?
Lars do you sell a recurve kit for 76 HEI dist? yes i changed weights and center piece also. |
Lars may be able to help you or you can do it yourself.
I bought a Pertronix HEI upgrade kit that had everthing in one box. The curve kit was one of the nicest I have seen. It provides 23 degrees of centrifugal advance. There were 3 sets of springs included along with all the other stuff. I have not yet got the engine broken in so no real results to post except I realy liked the kit better than any other I have seen. The point where all the advance comes in has not yet been optimized but maybe soon. Gotta get tags and brakes first. I do not know if you can get the curve kit by itself but it is worth a look see. -Mark. |
I installed Lar's kit and I have all of the advance full in at 2500 RPM with no knock.

Where does Lar's peddle his wares and services?
seriously. |
By email. Send him one and he will respond.

I emailed Lars yesterday. He doesn't sell the kits any more. They were too time consuming to put together and ship out. I guess we can find a comparable replacement somewhere?

Everything I read said not to use the kit weights, just the springs. The shape of the weights doesn't always work with the cam on the distributor. Here is some useful stuff from a pontiac site: Joe
