1970 to 1973 Exhaust tips......The same?

Are the exhaust tips the same for 1970 to 1973? How hard is it to find original ones, not the SS reproductions? Thanks for the insight.

Hello, the exhaust tips for the 1973 are unique to that year. They way they are mounted to the muffler has an angle on it that is different from the earlier models. The 73 will not fit the 70-72 model. I think the muffler is different for the 73 which is why the exhaust tips are different.

When looking for a new set for my 73 I went with the SS tips, since that is all I could find. Then I found out that my cars mufflers were replaced with 70-72 mufflers and the tips will not fit. So I either have to install new mufflers, or get new tips.

The tips are unique for 1973 cars. I replaced my old mufflers with the ones Dynomax lists for the 1973 Corvette - bought from MidAm. I had both kinds and ended up using 1973 tips and the installation hardware for the 1972 cars. Although the inlet is 2.5", the outlet on those Dynomax mufflers seems to be a bit small - maybe only 2.25" across? My tips crimped in a bit (only on the round part - can't see at all unless you look behind the rectangular part) as I tightened them down. I also had to bend the angle in a bit on both sides after tightening - piece of cake - they look stock!

Since you have a '71 the 70-72 is what you want.

You have the following choices...

1. Reproduction and readily available, but are only "similar" to the originals. They are made of a very thin stainless and are 'flared' a bit too much on the upper lip. But they do look good and are - relatively - cheap.

2. GM Service Replacements - Hard to find but constructed correctly. They are made of a flash chromed carbon steel, will have a weld along the bottom but not around the back edge, and will be stamped with a "W" ( for Walker Maffler - the manufacturer ) and the GM part number. They will also have a alignment notch cut into the top of the pipe.

3. Original Tips - Almost impossible to find. They are also flash chromed carbon steel, and have welds along the bottom AND around the back, and have "NO" part number stamping. They too have the alignment notch cut into the top of the pipe.

Looks like I have 1 service replacement. Looking at the picture, I think it's for a 73 not a 70-72? Is that right?

You're correct - you have a service replacement '73 RH tip there ... don't throw it away ... it is a 1 year only, NOS tip ... it is worth a few bucks to a '73 owner ...
