2006 Z06 has the legacy returned?
 
My favorite cars in history are the mid-year 63-67 vettes.

for a while now I was one of those guys who said they stopped making vettes in 1969 when they dropped the 427...and i'm young.


The C5 Z06' was nice but not quite BAD ASS if you know what I mean. Then I found that the C5R was using a 427 and my interest was sparked. When all of the Tuners started using streetable versions of the 427 I thought this is a signal to a return to glory.

Looks like I might be right if the new Z has the magic numbers attached (427) ....then that means to me they have started building VETTES again.


YES I am ready for the 7 liter heater. CONGRATS CORVETTE!!!!!

I have no idea what you mean, did you ever drive one? Did you ever take it around a track like it was meant to be driven, and then pass some of the most expensive cars in the world? :toetap:

Take it from someone who owned a 66 427 vert. The C5 Z06 is BAD ASS. The BADDEST Corvette ever made.

I totally agree. I was given a ride in a 03 ZO6 and it was bad; bad to the bone (sorry for the cliche). :)

Absolutely. The C6 Z06 will be indeed incredible. But at this moment, to date, no other Vette - *nothing* - touches the C5 Z06. It's the pinnacle of performance for the Corvette. The C6 Z06 will just take it one more step up! :cheers:

The Big Blocks of old are laughable in comparison with the C5 Z06. It's just not even close.

The number 427 is a magic number in corvette world (any numerologists out there?). Just like Hemi is to Chrysler (DC). I bet the aftermarket will be selling a lot of 427 badges because of the magic.

I've been to Vette Magic in Sacramento where there is the all corvette drag racing. The 427 Big Block street machines lurch and bellow down the strip and they do look "badass". The C5 Z06 is smooth and quiet in comparison - and much faster. Sort of Harley vs Kawasaki. The Kawasaki is faster but the Harley has some other kind of appeal.

I think this is part of the dilemma and goal for GM: they want the "badass" image and the sophisticated europeon style road racer in one car. The new Z06 with a sophisticated 427 small block and other hi-tech goodies may be able to be both. Just my 2 cents.

Ask the guys that have a ZO6 and an L-88 and ask how laughable the L-88 is. The L-88 is still king in the power department, the C5 ZO6's are better at everything else however. I do believe the L-88 is going to be dethroned in a big way with the C6 ZO6 however.

Why do some get so hyped up about the numbers 427? Mabey the ultrarare 216 L88's, or the 2 ZL1's that couldnt put the power to the ground btw (which is what makes the C5 Z06 the quickest today as a package), but otherwise we are way beyond the old big block 427 days.

The C6 Z06 and C5-R 427's are just LS1's bored and stroked and share absolutely nothing with a 427 Big Block of old.

The Old 427 Big Block used a 4.25" Bore x 3.76" Stroke
Pros - Has a lot of potential to increase displacement and massive air flowing heads
Cons - Huge size, weight, and gas guzzler.

The current Small Block 427 7.0L is a 4.125" Bore x 4.00" Stroke
Pros - New 21st century small block tecnology, shares nothing of old, 100%+ volumetric efficiency. Light Weight.
Cons - larger displacements difficult to achieve

Guys--lets not forget about the year "1972". Everyone who tries to compare 60's cars with the late models seems to have missed the fact that 1972 occurred. What is so big about 1972--well the conversion by automakers from using SAE Gross engine numbers to SAE NET. While SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) advises that there are no direct conversions #'s from SAE Gross to SAE Net--different exhaust systems, engine pulleys, accessory atachments etc....SAE does consider the difference 'generally' to be at least 20%. [note this is a discussion of engine hp AT THE FLY WHEEL AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH REAR WHEEL HP]

So that little ol' modern 350 in an 02-02 Z06, under rated at 405 HP NET-(true figures are probalby close to 425 NET). In '60's speak this equates to over 500 Gross HP. Yeah--500 Gross 60's HP out of a 350 cid engine--yeah, that's not Bad Ass............

Will the new 06 Z06 have more HP and Torque--yeah, of course...its called progress. Is it cool to have the return of the magic "427" number, oh yeah--cooler still if they change the 7 ltr designition on the beauty covers to read "427" cid (will not happen)...but is it the 'rebirth' of the bad ass corvette--not by a long shot.

Oh, Corvettes were intended to be road cars...so lets take a nice twisty road--say Hwy 1 from Monterey to Morro Bay California ...very scenic...very curvy...make a bad braking decision and off a cliff you go into the ocean.....04 Z06 vs. a 67 427 coupe......all factory stock....that would make for an interesting race-NOT.. It would be no contest..........

Man lets stop bad mouthing the RAT motors of old... An its quite obvious the suspension and steering changes that have occured :toetap: :smash: over the past 35 years! we are all corvette guys no??...or are some of us just overpaid yuppies!

Power schmower. The platform is too heavy for it to matter. I don't care if it puts down 500hp, it still can't compete with the C5 Z06. Not that it should, given that it was built decades ago, but the point still stands. It's just not the car the the C5 Z06 is. Period. When you compare the *cars*, it's just not even close. :)

OK, OK I know the c5 Z06 is cool...and yes i have driven one and yes they are fast. BUT...

If you see them on the road ...its just another vette...it's cooler to even see a ZR-1 in my opinion. and its definetly cooler to see a mid year 427 sting ray ...NO QUESTION.

Its going to be cool to see the new Z06 C6 with its 427.

the numbers 427 brings magic and there is no denying it.

as far as bad ass?

a 1966 L72 427 in late 1965 ran a 12.8 sec 1/4 with crapy old suspension and bias ply tires. imagine with new Z06 tires. Imean for christ sakes the reporters were complaining of whip lash!!!

Thats BAS ASS!
