Buy one. It's not 1980 any more. Autos are better than manuals in every measurable way now, and have been for the last 10 or 15 years (performance, MPG, etc.)

Manuals aren't "engaging" or "fun"...

I highly doubt the parking brake was the problem. Unless you drove your car into some 8 or 9 inch deep water or on the road or where there was a lot of under car water spraying around the back side...
