I made each one 16 inches so I could get an equal amount out of an 8 foot 2x4. And yes they are screwed together and work great. Just figure how high you want to go and then get the wood.

Properly installed with attention to detail they work.
You do clean the threads, lube and torque them...

I'm building a 69 vert and I'm changing to 1/2 inch. I changed my Chevelle over to 1/2 inch when I put wilwood brakes on it. If you think you may need wheel spacers I would go with longer studs also.
